Bellefonte runners shine at tri-meet

State College - BAHS

CRESSON — Bellefonte had the top seven girls finishers and the top five boys to the finish line as it posted four 15-50 victories against Bishop McCort and homestanding Penn Cambria in Laurel Highlands Conference cross country on Wednesday, Oct. 4.

Alex Crist and Emma Liadis were the medalists. Crist won by more than a minute with his time of 17 minutes, 6 seconds. Liadis’ 21:57 was 12 seconds faster than teammate Emma Raish.

Raish was followed by Natalie Jolley, Ashleigh Aukerman, Anna Tyson, Emma Burger and Victoria Schellenberger for the Lady Raiders.

Alex Mansfield was the boys runner-up. Caleb Vinnedge took third, Keith Eicholtz fourth and Kaiden Williams fifth.

The Bellefonte boys had three more runners in the top 10: seventh-place Maverick Muchmore, eighth-place Jacob Showers and 10th-place Isaiah Johnson.

Philipsburg-Osceola

CLEARFIELD — Philipsburg-Osceola had three runners in the top 10 as the Mounties emerged 2-1 from a very competitive LHAC quadrangular on Oct. 4 at Clearfield.

The Mounties scored a 26-29 win over Martinsburg Central and bested Clearfield by a 27-30 count. Richland kept P-O from the sweep, 24-33.

Philipsburg-Osceola athletes ran six-seven-eight. Nick Matweecha posted the best time for a Mountie, followed by Sam Massung and Tyke Peters.

Clearfield’s Eli Fox prevailed easily in the boys race, clocking 18:22.1.

The Lady Mounties went 1-2, beating Central, 24-37, but falling 17-42 against Clearfield and 22-33 versus Richland. Marlee Butterworth was the only Lady Mountie in the top 10, placing ninth.

Central’s Lanee Berkhimer ran 19:41.9 to edge Richland’s Natalia Mavridis for medalist.

Penns Valley

JOHNSTOWN — Three Rams wound up in the top 10 as the Penns Valley boys took two out of three in an LHAC quadrangular at Westmont Hilltop on Oct. 4.

Forest Hills and Johnstown Christian also ran.

Dilon Reilly led the Rams with a time of 18:06. Forest Hills’ Tyler Caron medaled with a time of 17:23.

Taven Price clocked in at 18:45 and Vince Smith had a 19:10 for the Rams, who topped Westmont, 24-31, and Johnstown Christian, 16-39, but fell to Forest Hills, 20-32.

The Lady Rams came up just a couple of points from a sweep but wound up 1-2, losing to the hosts on the sixth runners’ place after Penns Valley and Westmont tied at 28 and falling to Forest Hills, 27-28. The Lady Rams posted a 25-30 win against Johnstown Christian.

Penns Valley’s Lillyanna Smith medaled with a time of 20:50, and teammate Ayva Fetterolf was third. However, the only other Lady Ram in the top 10 was Elizabeth Dean, who was 10th.

Bald Eagle Area

LILLY — Colton Wagner ran fifth but it wasn’t enough to get the Bald Eagle Area boys the win in a five-school meet at War Memorial Park on Oct. 4.

Wagner was the only boy or girl from BEA to place in the top 10 as the Eagles and Lady Eagles faced Central Cambria, Chestnut Ridge, Portage and several Huntingdon runners. The Eagles dropped a 17-46 decision to Central Cambria. The BEA girls fell to Ridge, 19-38, Portage, 21-40, and Central Cambria, 15-50.

Huntingdon’s Tyler Rader was the boys medalist, with a result of 16:25. Central Cambria’s Abigail Sheehan won the girls race with a time of 20:00.

State College

HARRISBURG — State College captured the top 12 finishes and breezed to a 15-50 victory on the girls side at Central Dauphin East on Tuesday, Oct. 3.

The Lady Little Lions moved to 4-2.

The State College boys evened their record at 3-3 with a 19-36 win.

Brooke Shellenberger was the girls medalist, handing in a time of 23:14. Aaliyah Kidd took second, Makayla Raptosh third, Molly Dell fourth and Autumn Swisher fifth.

Erin Ruth, Kaitlyn Baylis, Cloe Michael, Taylor Kirkwood and Lily Friberg comprised the rest of the top 10.

State’s Eli Barabas pulled away from CD East’s Cail Brandenburg over the final 400 meters to prevail in the boys race. Barabas finished in 19:04.

Brandenburg edged a pair of Little Lions for second 15 seconds behind Barabas, with Schaffer Sohn and Owen Viglione putting up identical times as Brandenburg to take third and fourth.

After that, it was all State College in the top nine with Avery Selber fifth, Miles Ballard seventh, Matthew Morningstar seventh, Caleb Eveleth eighth and Ryan Caldwell ninth.

Holding out most of its accomplished runners, State College was swept at Altoona on Monday, Oct. 9, at Logan Elementary School.

The Little Lions fell, 17-41. The Lady Little Lions dropped a 15-49 decision.

Ridgway Invitational

RIDGWAY — The Bellefonte boys, with 107 points, placed second out of 16 teams at the Ridgway Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 7.

St. Joseph’s also competed, scoring 328 points to take 14th.

Brookville won the boys team championship with 90 points.

Crist had the best showing for the Red Raiders, taking fourth with a time of 17:19.4. Vinnedge was 18th with an 18:19.0 and Williams 29th in 18:37.5.

Mansfield placed 32nd, Eicholtz was 46th, Elijah Davis 47th and Muchmore 54th.

St. Joseph’s Colin Simander finished in 18:09.7 to take 11th place. Anthony Woomer was 67th for the WolfPack, while Cade Behrer placed 95th, Abel Reynolds 108th and Matt Rogan 124th.

In the girls half of the meet, Bellefonte took third with 113 points, while St. Joseph’s was sixth with 138.

Bellefonte’s Emma Liadis and St. Joseph’s Abby Ridenour were 12th and 13th individually. Liadis timed 21:33.3. Ridenour’s time was 21:35.2.

Jolley posted a 21:53.5 to take 16th, followed by Raish in 18th with a 21:54.3. Burger placed 34th, Aukerman 41st, Tyson 47th and Schellenberg 49th.

For St. Joseph’s, Brynn Wright crossed in 23rd place with a time of 22:25.5 and Amber Fisher’s 22:52-4 was good for 30th. Leah Wright was 37th, Seki Cambell 45th and Lizzy Eby, 82nd.
