Borough, CATA to unveil art contest bus

Centre County Gazette

STATE COLLEGE — The Centre Area Transportation Authority will host a public bus reveal event showcasing the winning design from its CATA Art Poster Contest at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28 at State College Area High School.

The contest invited local students, kindergarten through 5th grade, to submit original artwork around the theme “Connecting Our Community.” A winner from each grade level was chosen by a team of State College Area School Distric art instructors, and the six winning pieces were incorporated into a full bus wrap, co-sponsored by the Borough of State College and CATA. The bus will be on the road between May and November.

In addition to having their artwork featured on a bus, CATA is gifting a bundle of art supply kits to all contest winners, in addition to prizes generously donated by Discovery Space and Centre Elite Gymnastics.

The April 28 event will feature remarks from State College Mayor Ezra Nanes, CATA CEO Todd Horsley, and Danielle Crowe of the State College Area School District art department.

Community members, students, and families are encouraged to attend and celebrate the creativity and talent of local young artists.

“It’s inspiring to see the creativity of these students while reinforcing the importance of public transportation. We’re so pleased to partner with the borough to showcase and celebrate the creativity of young artists to the community and our visitors on a CATA bus this summer and fall,” said CATA CEO Todd Horsley. “And it’s a perfect way to connect students and families with our Youth Summer Pass program, which we hope makes it as easy and safe as possible for State College youths to get around, explore, and stay active all summer long.”

In addition to recognizing contest winners, CATA will use the event to promote its Youth Summer Pass program. The program allows individuals ages 18 and under to ride CATA buses free of charge from May through August with a free pass.

CATA staff will be available on-site during the event to assist families with signing up for the Youth Summer Pass. Interested participants can also register in advance or at any time by visiting CATA’s Customer Service Center, located at 108 E. Beaver Avenue in downtown State College.
