STATE COLLEGE — ClearWater Conservancy protects, connects, restores and stewards our region’s natural resources. Their Centred Outdoors program — now in its seventh season — is an invitation to everyone, of every age and fitness level, to explore and enjoy dozens of outdoor destinations throughout central Pennsylvania.
The goal of this popular program is to engage all people in the appreciation, conservation and protection of the bountiful natural resources in Centre and surrounding counties in an active, engaging and inspiring way.
New to the program this year, artist Jennifer Shuey is in the process of painting her way through the Centred Outdoors destinations.
“My intention as an artist is to help people appreciate the natural landscapes of central Pennsylvania and encourage conservation, so the partnership is a nice fit,” according to Shuey.
“I hope to introduce new audiences to the work of ClearWater Conservancy through my art by capturing the essential beauty of our local landscapes and pointing back to an organization — and their many partners — that work hard to make sure that special places like these are protected and accessible to us all.”
A solo exhibition in October titled “Centering Myself, Outdoors” will showcase the five-month collaboration between Shuey and ClearWater Conservancy while celebrating the people and the places chosen for this season’s outdoor adventures. Plus, Shey will be giving 20% of all sales from this project to ClearWater to further their conservation and stewardship of local natural lands and waters.
Hosted by State College Framing Company & Gallery at 160 Rolling Ridge Drive in State College, the solo art exhibition will run from Oct. 6 through Nov. 3. An opening reception on Friday, Oct. 6, from 5:30-8 p.m. will feature wines from University Wine Company — which has also collaborated with Shuey and ClearWater on some special label wines — and delicious hors d’oeuvres.
Shuey’s collection of more than a dozen original pastel paintings visually narrates her personal journey to get outside and enjoy these natural places. Like other Centred Outdoors participants, she is visiting many of these public gems for the first time.
“When I worked for ClearWater Conservancy, I honestly didn’t get out to explore much. I wanted to make a change this year. The Centred Outdoors program and our artistic partnership is motivating me to go out and experience the many benefits of outdoor activity and nature, too.”
“Jen’s commitment to local conservation efforts and our community continues to go well beyond the time she spent here as ClearWater’s executive director,” said Deb Nardone, current executive director of the organization. “We’re grateful and inspired by her creative expression of this commitment in a way that celebrates the beauty of nearby natural places and the benefits of spending time outside. Jen’s project literally illustrates the important connection between art and nature while highlighting that there are countless ways to enjoy the outdoors.”
