Centre County to receive $1.39M in traffic signal upgrades

CENTRE COUNTY —The state Dept. of Transportation on Tuesday, Aug. 4 announced that 86 municipalities across the Commonwealth will receive $38 million through the Green Light-Go Program to improve traffic safety and mobility by reducing congestion and improving traffic flow.

Centre County will receive $1,397,118 that bring improvements to College Township, Patton Township, Spring Township and State College Borough.

College Township — $190,175 for detection upgrades at the intersection of Route 340 (Shiloh Road) and Dreibelbis Street.

Patton Township — $69,228.26 for pedestrian and traffic signal modernization upgrades at the following intersections:

  • Colonnade Boulevard and Colonnade Way
  • Colonnade Boulevard and Kohl’s Drive
  • Waddle Road and Colonnade Boulevard 

Spring Township — $136,960 for equipment upgrades for the following intersections on Zion Road: 

  • I-99 southbound ramps
  • I-99 northbound ramps
  • Buckaroo Lane

State College Borough — $997,755.40 to extend the communication network between four adjacent signals and upgrading detection at 10 additional intersections:

  • University Drive and Ramp A-1, Ramp D-1, and Hastings Road
  • North Atherton Street and Hillcrest Avenue, West Park Avenue, Curtin Road,White Course Drive,Macadam Approach to Bus Depot.
  • South Atherton Street and, Beaver Avenue, Westerly Parkway, South Allen Street.
  • University Drive/University Drive Extension.
  • East Branch Rd/Private Driveway
  • West College Avenue/North Atherton Street/South Atherton Street.

“The safety improvements supported by the Green Light-Go program will help municipalities keep Pennsylvanians moving safely and efficiently. I’m proud that PennDOT continues to partner with communities to deliver real results,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll.

Green Light-Go grants are provided as reimbursements to municipalities for projects that improve the efficiency and operation of existing traffic signals. These projects are funded through the FY 2026–27 budget. Eligible improvements include, but are not limited to, installation of light-emitting diode technology, traffic signal retiming, special-event traffic planning, traffic signal monitoring, and upgrades to modern signal technologies.
