Centred Outdoors …

Hike around Colyer Lake for views that inspire

Submitted by ClearWater Conservancy

POTTER TOWNSHIP — Visitors are invited to explore Colyer Lake near Centre Hall with guides from ClearWater Conservancy’s Centred Outdoors program on June 26, 29 and 30. The 77-acre lake is located about 15 minutes from downtown Boalsburg when traveling east along Route 322 and is one of just a few lakes in the Central Pennsylvania region.

Colyer Lake is a popular destination year-round for outdoor enthusiasts and boaters, anglers and birdwatchers especially. The impounded lake was created in 1966 through the damming of Spring Creek and is currently owned and managed by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC). In 2014 the lake was drained temporarily to allow for necessary repairs to the dam before reopening in June 2016 after the completion of refurbishing projects supported by the PFBC, the “Save Colyer Lake” effort and the Wildlife for Everyone Foundation.

A day trip to Colyer Lake invites visitors of all ages to immerse themselves in an awe-inspiring natural setting and find inspiration in the scenic views of the lake. Those who choose to explore the lake on land and by foot will do so via the 2.6-mile Colyer Lake Trail loop. While circling the lake, there is plenty of wildlife activity to see and hear as the lake supports a robust ecosystem of plants and animals all year. In fact, the area is currently listed among the top five hot spots in Centre County on eBird for number of bird species reported, with more than 240 species observed. Human activity, such as fishing boats in the summer and ice fishing and ice skating in the winter, complements the buzz of the natural world and adds to the liveliness of the lake scene.

One of the major advantages of choosing Colyer Lake Trail as an outdoor destination for relaxation and exercise is the opportunity to modify the length of walk or hike that works best for one’s schedule and fitness goals. While the trail is 2.6 miles in length, many opt to do smaller sections of the trail at a time. The terrain is mostly flat and forested and sturdy footwear is recommended for areas where roots and rocks may be present.

Centred Outdoors adventure coordinators will lead free guided hikes approximately two miles in length at Colyer Lake on Sunday, June 26, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.; Wednesday, June 29, at 6 p.m.; and Thursday, June 30, at 10 a.m.

Those interested in joining the hike can meet at the Centred Outdoors welcome table to meet up with a group and hike the trail while learning about Colyer’s Lake ecosystem and characteristics from program guides.

This adventure is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, with options to modify the length and pace of one’s hike. For complete event details visit www.centredoutdoors.org.
