Thursday, May 7

National Day of Prayer

National Day of Prayer will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Park Forest Village United Methodist Church, 1833 Park Forest Ave., State College. There will be a short prayer service at noon.

Rustic Weaving Workshop

A Rustic Weaving Workshop will be held at Bald Eagle State Park in Howard from 1 to 4 p.m. outdoors. The exact location will be given upon online registration at www.clearwaterconservancy.org/events/rustic-weaving-workshop-1. Receive hands-on experience weaving with natural materials and learn about plant species that can be used not just for weaving, but also for water conservation. This program is open to the public but recommended for ages 10 and older. The workshop requires a $30 fee and pre-registration.

My First Business Workshop

This workshop teaches children ages 8 and over how to start their own business at Hall Library from 5 to 6 p.m. — just in time for Centre Hall Yard Sale weekend and Arts Fest! Call 814-364-2580 to register.

Chicken Dinner

Greater Buffalo Run Valley UMC, 102 Trinity Court, Bellefonte will host a chicken dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. Dinner is $12. Eat in or take out is available. Proceeds from the dinners benefit youth and outreach missions.

Mother’s Day Tea & Tour

Victorian Mother’s Day Tea & Tour from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Boal Mansion!, 163 Boal Estate Dr., Boalsburg. Enjoy an array of English teas, tea sandwiches, petit fours and other sweet treats with live music. The formal tea in the ballroom will be followed by a mini-tour of the museum and chapel. Wear your picnic best for this perfect holiday mother/daughter/friend gathering. Reservations are required, and spots are limited. Email office@boalmuseum.com for tickets.

Mother’s Day Concert

State College Area Municipal Band presents “The Golden Hour” featuring a commissioned piece by Cait Nishimura, with French Horn soloist Stephanie Gordan. The concert will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. at Mount Nittany Middle School, 656 Brandywine Dr., State College.

Centre Ballroom Dance

Centre Ballroom is sponsoring a ballroom dance on Sunday, May 10 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Lambert Hall, Bellefonte. The dance will start with a swing dance lesson. Admission is $10 per person. Please bring a snack to share.

Chess Night

Holt Memorial Library, 17 N. Front St. Philipsburg will host a Chess Night for beginners or experienced players from 5:30 to 7 p.m. There will be an instructor available to teach and assist anyone that would like to learn how to play. No registration required.

Nittany Valley Writers Network

The Nittany Valley Writers’ Network will meet in the Schlow Library Community Room, 211 S. Allen St., State College. Doors open at 6:00 pm and the meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Editor Kimberly McElhatten will present “Behind the Submission Button,” an inside look at the submission process through the lens of an editor with more than a decade of experience at Brevity, The Fourth River, and Autumn House Press. Learn what editors are (and aren’t) looking for in submissions and cover letters, how to tell whether a literary magazine or publisher is the right fit for your work, and how to better meet editorial standards and expectations. She will discuss common mistakes, and offer practical strategies to help your work stand out when submitting to literary magazines, contests, book prizes, and for publication. The event is free.

Centre Pieces Quilt Guild 

Centre Pieces Quilt Guild will host its monthly evening meeting at Blue Course Community Church, 1243 Blue Course Drive, State College at 6:30 p.m. We will be viewing an educational video in which Leah Day presents about free-motion quilting. Bring quilting items that you no longer have a use for. At every meeting we invite you to bring a quilt or current project to share, celebrate each other’s work and seek advice. Life Groups

SCA Wednesday Life Groups will be held at 6 p.m. at State College Assembly of God, 2201 University Dr., State College, providing an opportunity to study the Bible in order to grow in the Christian faith and in relationship with God and others. These groups are designed so anyone can join at any time and not feel they are behind in the study.
