BELLEFONTE — The Centre County Office of Transportation has received a grant award for $275,000 and plans to purchase four new accessible buses for its fleet. Transportation director David W. Lomison said the grant was given as a Capital Grand award, with $220,000 federally funded and $55,000 state funded.

Lomison asked the Centre County commissioners to approve the grant and to purchase the vehicles with the money, and the request was added to the upcoming consent agenda for approval. Lomison said the grant will purchase four General Motors 23-foot accessible transit buses that are fully equipped from Rohrer Bus Company. The total cost per bus is $68,732, for a total of $274,926. Lomison said the buses should be available by the end of the year and he thinks they should be on the road by November.

The Centre County Office of Transportation Services provides transportation services to clients of Centre County government and other social service agencies, as well as maintains the county vehicle fleet. Centre County Transportation is a shared-ride demand-response service.

Passengers must share the vehicle with other passengers and must make reservations for service at least one working day prior to the transportation need. More than one day for placing reservations is recommended to assure service availability.

Lomison said the county typically purchases Ford vehicles, but they were not offered by Rohrer this year. He said he went to General Motors because the contractor from Ford has been late on deliveries.
