HOWARD — Throughout Heritage Day, the public can explore the sights, sounds, and traditions of 19th-century Pennsylvania.
Heritage Day will be held at Eagle Iron Works and Curtin Villlage, 251 Curtin Road, Howard on Sunday, Aug. 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission to the Heritage Day fundraiser is $5 per person for everyone 11 years of age and older. Tickets are available at the gate.
The 1 p.m. Caboose dedication is open to the public at no charge.
Meet skilled artisans including:
- Shoemaker Rich Watters who is both a tailor and cobbler
- Herbalist Sue Morris who will demonstrate making natural health remedies
- Historians Phil Ruth and Matt Maris, sharing the stories of the Bald Eagle Valley Railroad and Bald Eagle & Spring Creek Navigation.
Fun for the Entire Family
Children can:
- Play authentic Victorian-era games
- Hunt for historic furnace slag
- Color the Caboose (coloring page)
- Learn the art of string making with the creative staff from Bald Eagle State Park
Visitors can also:
- Tour the restored herb garden with Penn State Extension Master Gardeners
- Watch a short film about the fascinating history of Curtin Village
- Take self-guided tours with knowledgeable volunteers stationed throughout the property
- Explore the ironmaster’s mansion, furnace complex, and workers’ village
Guests are invited to bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy an afternoon of live entertainment featuring:
- Traditional Celtic music by the Celtic Nations Duo from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m..
- The energetic rock sounds of Kidz at Heart at 2 and 3:30 p.m.
Scouting America Howard Troop 353 will be serving summertime favorites from the Carriage House kitchen. Proceeds of the kitchen in part benefit the scouts.
