The golf season is getting into full swing at local clubs and courses, and all of the venues are beginning their event and tournament schedules. Here’s a look at what’s been happening and some big upcoming events:
Mountain View Country Club
Hole-in-One
Jeff Duerr recently recorded his first hole-in-one on hole No. 2 at Mountain View Country Club. The hole measures 109 yards and Duerr used a 9-iron to strike the ace. Playing along with Duerr were his partners Don Winters, Steve Byron and Frank Harken.

Also last week, the Men’s Individual Tournament took place on Saturday and Sunday.
The tournament was set up in three flights — Championship, First and Second — and there were winners in the gross and net divisions in each.
In the Championship Flight, Matt Dougherty won first place in the gross division with a 143, and Mike Voltz was second with a 150. Jim Pringle won the net division with a 146, and Dave Soltesz and Glenn Sekunda tied for second at 147.
In First Flight, Aaron Tessler was first in gross with 160 and Steve Kirby was second with a 162. Pat Cronin took the net with a 140 with Aaron Morrison and Todd Horner tied for second at 157.
Second Flight gross was won by Fred Wilson with 169, and Aaron Roan was second with 171. Bill Gates won the net division with a 143 and Casey Wimmer was second at 151.
The Year Long Match Play signup is now going on and open to the first 32 players. Play will begin on June 1.
Nittany Country Club
Nittany Country Club will host the 15th Annual BJ Wetzler Memorial Golf Tournament on May 20.
The event is named in honor of BJ Wetzler, who was a star softball player and overall athlete at Bellefonte Area High School.
The tournament is an 18-hole, four-man scramble that will go off in a shotgun start with a morning and afternoon group. Presently, there are 60 players in the morning group and 64 in the group starting later.
Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the BJ Wetzler Softball Scholarship Fund and the Bellefonte Softball Boosters.
Philipsburg-Elks Lodge and Country Club
The Elks Golf Club just finished its second tournament of the season over the past weekend with the completion of the Jack Frank Memorial that benefits the Philipsburg-Osceola baseball team.
Two weeks before, on April 29, it was the Paul Bradley Memorial Tournament.
Bradley was a long-time Elks member, high school golf coach, guidance counselor and PIAA official, and this was the inaugural tournament conducted in his honor.
The Bradley was a four-man, 18-hole scramble/best ball combination tournament with a shotgun start in which more than 60 golfers took part.
Finishing in first place with an overall net score of 122 was the team of AJ Czap, Nate Lucas, Eddie Myers and Matt Johnson.
In second place was the team of Jim Dixon, Brad Brown, Pat Brown and Jason Yoder with a 126, while Andrew Mann, Hayden Hayward, Jon Whitman and Tyler Martin came in third at 128.
There were three closest-to-the-pin awards won by Jack Williams, Rob Bressler and Rick Campomizzi.
Matt Johnson won the longest drive, Rob Bressler won the straightest drive and Johnson won closest to the flag.
The Jack Frank Memorial is played in honor of another long-time member, Jack Frank, and is now conducted for the benefit of the P-O baseball team.
The tournament is an 18-hole, four-man scramble played in two shotgun waves, one at 8 a.m. and the other at 1 p.m..
The team of Dave Thompson, Payton Guelich, Drew Tocimak and Chris Thompson took first place in the gross division with a total gross of 14-under, 56. Johnny Harpster, Zach Czap, AJ Czap and Bob Mitchess took second at 13-under 57 and were tied with Mike Willis, Adam Beers, Jason McCliment and Bradon McCliment. Also in second place were Matt Curtis, Mark Curtis, Chris Fox and Eric Nartatez.
In the net division, Mike Willis, Adam Beers, Jason McCliment and Brandon McCliment were first at 22-under 48. The Matt Curtis team was second at 21-under, and the team of Aaron Levonick, JP Levonick, Cory Wood and Aaron Thompson were third at 18-under.
Mari Curtis and Derrick Weitoish won closest to the pin, AJ Czap won longest drive and Chris Fox won straightest drive.
Coming up at the club will be the W. Carl Lupton Memorial on May 21 to May 29 and the “Q” Tournament on May 21.

This is the inaugural PSU Hockey golf tournament hosted by head coach Guy Gadowsky that will benefit the Penn State Nittany Lions hockey program. The tournament is in a four-man scramble format.
