PHILIPSBURG — The Philipsburg-Elks Country Club held its annual Club Championship Tournament over the weekend, and two very familiar names came up as winners.
Three-time winner Matt Johnson outlasted 2020 champion Carter Fischer, 1-up, in the 36-hole final played on Monday at the club.
Johnson and Fischer went into the 35th hole all-even, and Johnson won the hole after Fischer’s lob wedge to the green slid just off the green and led to a bogie.
One-up heading into the final hole, Johnson chipped close for a par, halved the hole, and took the 2025 Men’s Championship.
The women’s tournament came down to two tournament veterans as well.
Twenty-time champion Jody Czap faced two-time champion (and 12-time Clearfield CC title holder) Cathy Weitoish in an 18-hole final on Monday.
Czap got off to a blazing start with three first-nine birdies and went on to best Weitoish for her 21st Elks Club championship.
On her way to the title, Czap defeated Georgiann Way and Philipsburg-Osceola senior Maddyx Hampton, while Weitoish beat Tracy Branthoover and former P-O golf coach Jen Johnston in the first round and the semifinal.
Branthoover went on to win the women’s First Flight over Way, 5-and-4, and Macy Neideigh took Third Place.
Payton Guelich took Third Place in the men’s tournament, and Michael Czap took Fourth.
Oliver Harpster bested Jared Anderson, 3-and-2 in the First Flight title match, and Jason Yoder won over Andrew Mann in the Second Flight.
Other flight winners were Tyler Martin in Third Flight, Terry Smith in Fourth Flight, Davey Williamson in Fifth Flight, Drew Tocimak in Sixth Flight and Dave Morelli in Seventh Flight.
At Nittany Country Club, the Championship Tournament also took place over the Labor Day Weekend.
The Men’s Club Championship was won by Mark Johnson, and the Ladies Champion was Staci Redman.
The Senior Club Championship was taken by Joe Beigle.
The flight winners in the tournament were Scott Gray, First Flight; Alex Stewart, Second Flight; and Kevin Rimmey, Third Flight.
At The Mountain View Country Club, there was a tense match in the Women’s Championship Final.
Tracey Pletcher defeated Christy Miller in a sudden death playoff on the 19th hole.
The win clinched Pletcher’s third straight women’s title.
In the men’s division, John Au bested former Toftrees champion Chad Dworsky in the Final. It was Au’s first title at Mountain View, and he was able to defeat Zac Zidik, Steve Kirby, and Mike Voltz on his way to the Final.
