CENTRE COUNTY — The National Day of Prayer is on Thursday, May 1, and local organizations are hosting events in celebration of the day.
According to a press release from The Christian Business Men’s Connection, the first Thursday in May is proclaimed by the president of the United States for “all Americans to humble themselves, repent from their sin and seek God for the good of the nation. Because of its focus, this day is always a nationwide, non-political event.”
The theme for the National Day of Prayer this year hails from Romans 15:13 — “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
There are multiple events planned around Centre County in observance of the National Day of Prayer.
CBMC will be hosting two sessions of public spontaneous prayer on Thursday, May 1. From 7 to 8 a.m. and again from 8 to 9 a.m. on the Front Parade Grounds at the Boalsburg Military Museum flagpole, 51 Boal Ave. At the spontaneous prayer event there will be free coffee between the sessions and several local church leaders will be participating. The event will move to the Parade Ground Gazebo in the case of bad weather.
Another event will be held on the National Day of Prayer at Talleyrand Park in Bellefonte. At the Gazebo, several local church leaders will participate in the National Day of Prayer event from noon to 1 p.m.
Additionally, Park Forest Village United Methodist Church will be open to the public for prayer in the sanctuary on Thursday, May 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a worship service at noon.
The very first National Day of Prayer was organized by the National Prayer Committee in 1983 with an observance at Constitution Hall in Washington D.C. For more information, visit nationaldayofprayer.org.
