Family hosts blood drive in memory of members killed in car crash

BOALSBURG — The American Red Cross invites the community to give blood in memory of Katharyn “Kayte” Kocher Derhammer.

Derhammer, 29, of Bellefonte, passed away in September 2024 after a car crash in Centre County. She was 33 weeks pregnant and received 20 units of blood during the first eight hours after the crash.

“Kayte was a person who radiated kindness, love and unwavering devotion to her family, friends and community,” her mother Mary Fogle said. “She had a passion for giving back.”

Every day, volunteer blood donors are needed to help save lives. A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 units of blood.

The blood drive will be held on April 24 at the Boalsburg Vol. Fire Co., 113 E. Pine St., Boalsburg, from noon to 5 p.m.

To make an appointment to give blood at this drive, donors can visit RedCrossBlood.org and use the sponsor code KAYTE, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

This spring, blood donors can plant seeds of hope for patients in need by coming to give blood, platelets, or AB Elite plasma. All who come to give April 13-30, 2026, will receive a $15 e-gift card. Terms and additional details can be found at RedCrossBlood.org/Hope.
