STATE COLLEGE — Stacey Karchner, a family recovery life coach through the BALM (Be A Loving Mirror) Institute for Family Recovery, will be teaching a free eight-week course sponsored by Applegate Recovery for those who are affected by another’s substance use disorder/addiction.

BALM evolved around the fact that those with substance use dsorder are human beings and deserving of love, just as any other person is. The family role is crucial in helping someone recover. Research shows when the family gets well, the loved one has a much better chance of getting and staying well. The family needs just as much, if not more, help with recovery than the loved one.

The course Karchner will be teaching is a component of the BALM year-long program. Lessons include topics such as the crucial role of the family, how to set boundaries and use leverage, how to help motivate change, enabling vs. helping, self care, mindfulness and more. Family members may find a new perspective and learn new ways of acting, being and speaking without anger and judgment, becoming their loved one’s chief supporter, rather than the obstacle.

The course begins on April 18 and will be held every Tuesday from 5:30-8 p.m. for eight weeks in person at Applegate Recovery, 915 Benner Pike in State College.

To find out more about the course or to enroll, email skarchner9@gmail.com or call (814)360-7590.
