First Friday ­— Friday, April 4

Members of the community are invited to experience the cool vibes of downtown State College with its monthly First Friday event at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 4, in the MLK Plaza downtown State College.

Organized by the Downtown Improvement District, participants can experience a casual atmosphere with art, people-watching, mingling, shopping and dining. First Friday attendees get after-hours access to downtown State College’s businesses with free parking in the Pugh, Fraser and Beaver garages. Validation can be found at participating businesses.

Light of the World Clothing Bank — Friday, April 4 and Saturday, April 5

The Light of the World Clothing Bank will be open from 2:30 to 5 p.m. on Friday, April 4 and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 5, at Saint John’s United Church of Christ in Bellefonte.

Free clothes will be available for everyone from babies to adults.

State College Municipal Band Spring/Side by Side Concert — Sunday, April 6

The State College Area Municipal Band is hosting its annual Spring/Side by Side Concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, in the auditorium at Mount Nittany Middle School in State College.

Band members will play alongside local middle school students. The band will play several pieces, including Sousa music before the middle school students join them onstage to play some more selections.

The concert is free and open to the public, donations are also accepted.

Drop-In Guided Tour: Roots and Renewal — Sunday, April 6

Guests are invited to a drop-in guided tour at the Palmer Museum of Art at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, in State College.

The tour will revolve around the Palmer’s different exhibitions and collections with a knowledgeable guide.

UUFCC Music Series “String Music for Spring” — Sunday, April 6

“String Music for Spring,” part of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Centre County, will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, at UUFCC in State College.

The program will feature Gregory Glessner on violin, Hannah Lin-Gessner on Violin and John Roxburgh on viola. The performers are professional musicians who teach locally and perform in many local chamber ensembles and orchestras.

Talk with Takac Townhall: SCI Rockview — Monday, April 7

State Rep. Paul Takac will host a townhall to garner community feedback surrounding the potential closure of SCI Rockview and Quehanna Boot Camp from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 7, at the Snow Shoe Township Building in Clarence.

Knit Wits — Monday, April 7

Community members are invited to bring their knitting or crocheting projects from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Monday, April 7, at the Holt Memorial Library in Philipsburg.

All skill levels are welcome to join. There is no set project, so guests are asked to bring what they are currently working on.

Bird Walks with the State College Bird Club — Tuesday, April 8

The State College Bird Club and the Millbrook Marsh Nature Center are hosting a bird walk at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, at the nature center in State College.

Guests are invited to start off their day by observing birds that are migrating to and through the Centre Region. The program is open to all ages and is great for beginners.

A donation of $5 is suggested to support Millbrook Marsh Nature Center, and guests are asked to dress for the weather and bring binoculars.

Women’s Cigar Club — Tuesday, April 8

The Cigar Den’s North Store will host its Women’s Cigar Club at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, in State College.

The club is a gathering for women who love cigars or are eager to learn more in a warm and inclusive environment. Each meeting will feature a pairing and a chance to explore the cigar lifestyle.

Guests are invited to drop by; no RSVP is needed.

Nittany Valley Writers Network Meeting — Tuesday, April 8

The Nittany Valley Writers Network is meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, in the Community Room at the Schlow Centre Region Library in State College.

Steve Deutsch, an award-winning poet, will speak about poetry and do a brief reading of his work. Deutsch is the poetry editor of Centered Magazine and served as the first poet in residence at the Bellefonte Art Museum.

The event is free and open to the public. The Nittany Valley Writers Network looks to create a sharing, supportive community to link writers coming from all levels of experience and genres. For more information, contact Dave at dmarvin14@msn.com.

Nittany Baptist Church Children’s Program — Wednesday, April 9

Nittany Baptist Church will have its AWANA program for kids in kindergarten through sixth grade at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, at the church in State College.

The program is designed to build a spiritual foundation in children to help them navigate life using the nationally recognized AWANA program. The program will be in building two.

Free Smartphone Help Session — Wednesday, April 9

The Mid-State Literacy Council is hosting a free technology help session on smartphones from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 0, at the Penns Valley Senior Center in Madisonburg.

At the session, attendees will get to meet with a trained tutor to get all their smartphone questions answered.

Author Talk with David Roediger — Thursday, March 10

The Print Factory will be hosting an author talk with David Roediger, author of “An Ordinary White: My Anti-Racist Education,” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, at the Print Factory in Bellefonte.

“An Ordinary White” is the life story of Roediger, a historian and “radical” American writer.

The event is free and open to the public.

Centre County DCNR Trails Advisory Committee Forum — Thursday, April 10

The DCNR Trails Advisory Committee in partnership with the Centre Region Planning Agency is hosting a public trails forum on Thursday, April 10, at the Boalsburg Fire Hall in Boalsburg.

The forum will have two sessions. The first from 3 to 4:30 with speakers from College Township to talk on local trail development and the DCNR representative to update and receive feedback on the PA Land and Water Trail Network Strategic Plan. The second session will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. with speakers from Rothrock Trail Alliance on their trail experience and the DCNR to again give an update and receive feedback on the strategic plan.

The event is free and open to the public, registration is not required.

Gallery Talk: Profiles of Vulnerability and Protection — Thursday, April 10

Guests are invited to the Palmer Museum of Art at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, in State College for Gallery Talk: Profiles of Vulnerability and Protection.

The event will provide in-depth engagement on the Palmer’s special exhibition, “Profiles of Vulnerability and Protection” with the theme “Vulnerable Labor and Protection,” led by Karen Keifer-Boyd, a Penn State professor of art education and women’s, gender and sexuality studies.
