LEWISTOWN — Geisinger Lewistown Hospital has earned a 5-Star Overall Hospital Quality Rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services  — the highest possible distinction. According to Becker’s Hospital Review, it’s among just 20 hospitals in Pennsylvania and 384 nationwide to achieve this recognition, placing the facility in an elite tier for patient safety and quality of care.

The CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating reflects how well hospitals perform across multiple categories, including safety of care, mortality, readmissions, patient experience and timely and effective care. A five-star CMS rating requires sustained performance across dozens of quality measures and reflects years of coordinated effort, clinical excellence, innovation and collaboration among clinical and operational teams.

“This five-star CMS rating builds on our strong record of excellence in safety and quality,” said Sabrina Sumner, D.O., chief medical officer at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital. She added that, coupled with the recent ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, the CMS rating spoke volumes about the hospital’s quality of patient care.

“This achievement is the result of a unified, hospital-wide commitment to continuous improvement,” said Sumner. “Our teams are focused on transparency, accountability and getting better every day. Reaching five-star status took strong leadership support and collaboration at every level — our focus remains on delivering the very best care to our patients and community.”
