Giving Tuesday happens the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, although it is a yearlong effort. After a few days of spending due to online and instore deals, the day gives people the opportunity to give back to their community and the world.
Giving Tuesday was introduced in 2012 by the United Nations Foundation. On this day, people are encouraged to donate or volunteer around their community to help people need.
“Our global network collaborates year-round to inspire generosity around the world with a common mission to build a world where generosity is a part of everyday life,” the Giving Tuesday website said.
Around Centre County, there are many ways that members of the community could participate and get involved especially with the help of Volunteer Centre County.
Volunteer Centre County is a volunteer service center that helps people locate ways they can volunteer or donate to Centre County. Their website has a list of over 106 volunteer opportunities. These opportunities range from donation collections to medical volunteering.
Here are some of the opportunities people can participate in to give back in the spirit of Giving Tuesday:
- Red Kettle Campaign Bell Ringer — In order to volunteer here you can be any age, although children must be accompanied by an adult. All money collected from this opportunity would go to The Salvation Army of Centre County.
- Volunteer at the Lemont Christmas Market — In order to participate in this opportunity you must be 13 years or older and all the help goes toward the Lemont Village Association.
- Volunteer at Centre LGBT+ — Volunteers at Centre LGBT+ would include helping the organization with the events they hold.
- Tutoring for Mid-State Literacy Council — In order to volunteer here volunteers must be over the age of 18. The tutoring would help with TOEFL/ GED prep in English and math or being an English as a second language tutor.
On their website, Volunteer Centre County also has a list of places where you could donate items or money. Certain organizations need specific items that are listed on their website.
