CENTRE COUNTY — The Skytop Mountain Golf Club hosted the annual Pets Come First Charity Golf Tournament over the past weekend at the mountainside course.
The tournament, which benefits the non-euthanizing pet sanctuary located in Centre Hall, was played in the two-man scramble format and had 23 teams participate.
The first place winners with a score of 62 were Bill Wilson and Andy May, with second place going to the team of Mason Risha and Charlie Driscoll with a score of 63.
Third place was won by Nick and Mela Heltzel with a 66.
The tournament, which is played each year at Skytop, was another successful fundraiser for Pets Come First.
According to its website, Pets Come First “is a non-euthanasia animal shelter committed to caring for animals of central Pennsylvania and supporting the local community.”
Pets Come First works closely with other local rescues, clinics, and pet food pantries to support community cat “trap and release” programs along with low cost spay and neuter programs to combat the root cause of pet overpopulation.” The sanctuary is non-profit and facilitates the placement of stray or unwanted animals into loving homes.
Mountie Matman Tournament
The Annual Mountie Matman Golf Tournament was held at the Philipsburg Elks Country Club on Aug. 15 with over 100 participating golfers.
The tournament was played in a four-player scramble format with a double shotgun start at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. and included food, beverages, lunch and prizes awarded to the winners.
The funds raised at the tournament benefit the Philipsburg-Osceola Youth Wrestling Club Programs and are used for equipment, club wrestling, tournaments, USA wrestling memberships and t-shirts for wrestlers.
This year’s winners in the gross division were, in first place, the team of Keith Hahn, Colby Hahn, Eddie Myers and Robert McGhee with a score of 18-under par, 52.
The team of Johnny Harpster, Matt Johnson, AJ Czap and Jim Dixon finished in second place with a score of 16-under 54.
Two teams tied for third place at 14-under 56: Tom Sankey, Jon Freedberg, Bob Mitchell and Nate Lucas, and Justin Fye, Bruce Fye, Jayme Fye and Josh Bennett.
In the Net Division, first place went to Hahn, Hahn, Myers and McGhee with a 22-under 48, and Freedburg, Lucas, Mitchell and Sankey took second place with a 20-under 50.
Four teams tied at 19-under: Craig Folmar, Jim Cowfer, Brian Barr, and Todd Schickling; Gib Weller, Ray Millward, Larry Blake and Tim Blake; Bennett, Fye, Fye, and Fye; and Brandon McCliment, Doug Sankey, JP Levonick and Tyler Good.
On course prizes included Irv Myers, Steve Frank, and Hayden Hayward, Closest to the Pin, and Donny Jones, putting champion.
Coming up at the Elks CC will be the 2026 Club Championship.
Penn State Member Championships
The Penn State University Golf Courses held their Member Championships on Aug.15-16 and sent out a press release announcing the results:
“Congratulations to Alex Hoskins on taking home the title of Club Champion at our annual member club championship!
Despite some tough weather conditions out on the White Course today, Alex posted a solid even par round of 72 to pair with his 73 (+1) round on the Blue Course on Saturday for a two-day total of 145 (+1) to claim the trophy!
Shoutout to runner-up Dylan Duval and everyone who braved the elements and competed over the weekend. Thank you to all of our members for making it a great championship.”
The Member-Guest tournament featured five different formats, and there were four different team winners who advanced to a winner-take-all shootout.
The winners, in what turned out to be after four extra sudden-death holes, were the team of Patti and Lani Woolcott.
The Woolcotts held their own and came through with what the tournament organizers called an unforgettable victory.
This was the first Member-Guest Tournament at the PSU Courses.
