MIFFLINBURG — Maria Cotter hit a pair of 3-pointers in the pivotal second quarter en route to a game-high 16 points as the Bellefonte Area High School girls basketball team picked up its second win of the season, 45-41, at Mifflinburg on Wednesday, Feb. 7.
The Lady Raiders outpointed Mifflinburg 13-6 in the second quarter and held a 21-13 advantage at halftime. Cotter had 8 points at the intermission.
Madison Ripka and Keira Whitman came through with 12 points apiece for the Lady Raiders. Elizabeth Sheesley tossed in 15 points to top Mifflinburg.
The Lady Raiders finished the season with a 2-20 mark with a 62-24 Laurel Highlands Conference reversal at Martinsburg Central on Monday, Feb. 12.
The Lady Dragons held Bellefonte to single digits in each quarter while scoring at least 14 in every stanza.
Cotter topped the Lady Raiders with 8 points. Central’s Megan Diehl scored 15.
A 15-point deficit in the second quarter was the difference in the Lady Raiders’ 50-35 loss to visiting Tyrone on Thursday, Feb. 8.
Cotter fronted the Lady Raiders with 11 points. Laney Woomer of Tyrone led all scorers with 14 points.
State College
STATE COLLEGE — State College wrapped up the regular season with a 16-6 mark after turning back visiting McDowell, 63-44, on Saturday, Feb. 10.
Five Lady Little Lions scored at least 8 points. State College led by 10 at halftime and then got 9 of Sienna Wilson’s team-leading 15 points as part of a 20-point third-quarter outburst that put things away.
McKenna Whitehurst finished with 11 points and Carley Donnell 10 for the Lady Little Lions. Jess Hawbaker and Diana Tsarnakova finished with 8 apiece.
McDowell’s Amaiya Nelson paced all scorers with 22 points.
Central Dauphin East snapped State College’s six-game winning streak on Friday, Feb. 9, 50-33.
The Lady Little Lions managed just 12 points by halftime and found themselves trying to claw their way out of a 16-point deficit.
Sheree Wilson was the only State College scorer to make it into double digits, finishing with 13 points.
Alexis Ferguson keyed CD East with 12 points. The host team had four players with at least 8.
State College will be the No. 2 seed in the District 6, Class 6A playoffs.
St. Joseph’s
MIFFLINTOWN — Naomi Crispin and Jacee Cunningham combined for 37 points as St. Joseph’s punched its ticket into the Tri-Valley Athletic Association championship game with a 57-51 win over Susquenita on Feb. 12 at Juniata High School.
The WolfPack, who were coming off their first loss of the season, improved to 22-1 and earned the right to play Upper Dauphin for the TVAA title, as Crispin fired in a team-high 19 points.
Cunningham netted 10 of her 18 in the fourth quarter, which St. Joseph’s entered up by 9.
St. Joseph’s Alexia Luckovich finished with 9 points. Susquenita’s Ayahna Fleisher made four 3-pointers and led all scorers with 25 points.
On Thursday, Feb. 8, Williamsburg’s Levada Gorsuch scored 20 of her 26 points in the second half as the visiting Lady Pirates (21-1) pulled away from the WolfPack in the second half to win a potential District 6, Class 1A playoff preview, 67-41.
Crispin topped St. Joseph’s with 24 points. The WolfPack’s Aubrey Yartz scored all 8 of her points in the fourth quarter. Lauren Himes added 7 points for St. Joseph’s.
Williamsburg also received 22 points from Ayla Hileman.
Cunningham netted 15 points and Yartz 14 to power the WolfPack over visiting Midd-West, 71-27, on Tuesday, Feb. 6.
St. Joseph’s, which also got 12 points from Crispin, led 24-11 after one quarter and then broke it wide open with an 18-4 run in the second quarter.
Izzy Walter scored 10 for Midd-West.
Penns Valley
ALTOONA — Penns Valley is headed to the District 6 playoffs in Class 3A, but the Lady Rams will enter the postseason trying to turn things around from a three-game losing streak after falling 56-35 at Bishop Guilfoyle on Feb. 12 in Laurel Highlands Conference action.
The Lady Rams (10-12) only were able to crack double digits in one of the four quarters. Elle Dinges’ 10 points paced Penns Valley.
Ellie Romig chipped in with 9 for the Lady Rams.
Anberlyn Petrecca and Maurie Querry scored 11 points apiece to lead Guilfoyle, which took a 20-2 record into the LHAC semifinals.
A 3-point third quarter was the Lady Rams’ undoing in a tough 47-41 conference loss to visiting Huntingdon on Feb. 8.
The Lady Rams only trailed by 3 at halftime but were trying to battle back from 13 down heading into the fourth quarter. Scotty Dinges netted 14 points for Penns Valley, which also got 8 from Elle Dinges and 7 from Lilly Smith.
Huntingdon’s Lily Fiscus fired in 29 points, going 13-of-15 at the foul line.
Bald Eagle Area
HUNTINGDON — Bald Eagle Area’s recently struggling offense had its best performance in weeks on Feb. 12, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Lady Eagles to victory at playoff-bound Huntingdon.
The Lady Bearcats posted a 52-38 victory.
The outcome closed a 6-16 season for BEA. No other details were available at press time.
The game ended a string of five straight games in which the Lady Eagles were held to 26 points or fewer, including a 44-26 loss to visiting Jersey Shore on Feb. 6 and a 43-22 setback at home against Hollidaysburg on Feb. 8.
Peyton Dincher’s 22 points were almost enough by themselves for Jersey Shore. Dincher had 12 points by the start of the second quarter.
Olivia Boone paced the Lady Eagles, who were scoreless in the first quarter, with 11 points. Taylor Habovick, Riley Housel and Sybil Thompson scored 5 apiece.
Hollidaysburg raced out to a 24-2 lead by the end of the first quarter in its meeting with the Lady Eagles.
Gabbie Perry led BEA with 7 points and had the Lady Eagles’ only bucket of the first quarter. Habovick scored 6.
Hollidaysburg was led by Clare Padamonsky’s 12 points. Makenna Weimert netted 11.
Philipsburg-Osceola
PHILIPSBURG — Despite an 8-point first half, Philipsburg-Osceola just missed on its second win of the season, falling to visiting West Branch, 37-30, on Feb. 9.
Khendyl Sharrer fronted the Lady Mounties with 11 points. P-O also got 6 from Lily Warlow.
West Branch’s Jamica Horsey topped all scorers with 13 points.
The Lady Mounties only trailed visiting Bellwood-Antis by 4 heading into the second quarter on Feb. 8, but a 20-2 Lady Devils’ second quarter propelled B-A to a 64-27 victory in Laurel Highlands Conference action.
Sharrer and Warlow each scored 7 for the Lady Mounties. Maddy Malinich netted 6.
Bellwood’s Lilly Gerwert scored 23 points.
Sharrer and Warlow each tossed in 12 points and Emily Gustkey added 10 in a 64-42 loss at Hollidaysburg on Feb. 12.
Padamonsky poured in 26 points for the Lady Tigers, who won their 20th game.
The Lady Mounties were 1-20 with one game left in their season.
