CENTRE COUNTY — The falling leaves of fall can quickly lead to clogged gutters, which can cause water damage, roof leaks and possible foundation problems as winter approaches.

During autumn, falling leaves and debris can quickly accumulate in your gutters, blocking the flow of rainwater. If left unattended, clogged gutters can freeze in winter, causing ice dams that damage your roof and gutters. Fall cleaning ensures that your gutters are ready to handle winter weather, reducing the risk of leaks and water damage to your home.

To clean your gutters, you need:

  • A ladder
  • Work gloves
  • Trowel
  • Bucket or garbage bag
  • Hose
  • Plumber’s snake

Fall is often accompanied by wet, slippery conditions, so place your ladder on a stable, flat surface, to safely clean it. Always have someone spot your ladder while in use. Avoid leaning too far to the side while working. Instead, move the ladder along as you clean to stay safe.

Autumn leaves are the main culprits when it comes to clogged gutters. Put on your gloves to protect your hands from sharp debris and start scooping out leaves, twigs and dirt with your trowel or hands.

After removing the bulk of the debris, use a garden hose to flush out any remaining dirt or small particles. Check to make sure that the gutters and downspouts are draining properly while using the host. If the water does not flow smoothly through the downspouts, there may be a blockage that needs further attention.

As you clean, inspect your gutters for any signs of damage, such as cracks, rust or loose fasteners. Tighten any loose screws or replace any rusting or damaged sections.

Taking the time in autumn to remove leaves, flush out debris and inspect for damage will protect your home from water-related issues when freezing temperatures and snow arrive.
