BELLEFONTE — The Bellefonte Art Museum for Centre County has announced through a press release a new exhibit in the Special Exhibition Gallery for the month of March — “The Art of Weaving” by Jill Curley.

This exhibit will be on display March 4 through March 27.

The use of fabric to clothe and comfort, to make work easier and our lives more beautiful, has long been part of the human experience. The earliest traces of woven cloth have been found in the Paleolithic Era, as early as 30,000 years ago. We feel for texture and coolness, we feel for warmth and silkiness, we see for color and design. Fabric is vitally important to us. From the beginning, creating fabric has been both craft and art.

The process of weaving begins with a fiber, a long, thin material with a certain amount of structural strength and flexibility. Fibers can be naturally occurring, like cotton, wool, or flax, or can be synthetically produced, like nylon or rayon. When multiple fibers are spun together, by hand or machine, they create yarn or thread, which is woven together into fabric.

In this exhibition, Curley takes visitors on a journey from fiber to fabric. She will share her love and knowledge of the weaving process alongside her beautiful creations.

Join her for a weaving demonstration during the opening reception.

Exhibitions are free and open to the public during regular museum hours: Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4:30 p.m.
