STATE COLLEGE — State College Kiwanis Club awarded scholarships of $1,000 each to six accomplished high school seniors on Monday, May 18. The students, along with their parents, attended a dinner at South Hills School of Business and Technology and received recognition for their achievements in scholarship, leadership, and service to the community.

Kiwanis President Bill Frantz welcomed the group and highlighted key statements from each of the student essays that exemplified their past activities and goals for the future. Each student had the opportunity to share where they will be attending college, their area of focus, and to acknowledge their parents and others who helped them along their way.

  • Elena Diaz will be attending Penn State University and plans to major in political science.
  • Giulia Korzick will also attend Penn State and will study graphic design and trumpet performance.
  • Keira Leonard will be traveling to Ulster University in Northern Ireland to major in architecture.

This is the 21 st year that the Kiwanis Club has given out scholarships, bringing the total of scholarships presented to 113 to date. Kathryn Mackes, long-time Kiwanian and a past club president, explained why this project is important to the club. “It’s a big part of our mission. Anytime we can help our young people to accomplish their goals, it’s a win for us and the whole community,”
