STATE COLLEGE — The League of Women Voters of Centre County will host an evening with Dave Abruzzese of Spotlight PA titled “Local News Matters!” on Wednesday, June 24 at 7 p.m. at the Calvary Harvest Fields Lodge Conference Room, 150 Harvest Fields Dr., Boalsburg.
The event is open to the public without registration. For live Zoom link, email: www.wvcentrecounty@gmail.com. The recording will also be available on the LWVCC website.
With local news sources failing across our nation, how residents get their news has become fractured and in some cases, unreliable. Centre County is fortunate to have The Centre County Gazette, Town and Gown and other forms of print, broadcast and digital media. The LWVCC endeavors to educate, encourage and empower all eligible citizens to vote.
“The basis of making civic decisions, like voting, rests on solid information,” says Kathleen O’Connell, president of LWVCC.
Spotlight PA is an independent, non-profit, non-partisan news source covering Harrisburg and statewide issues. Dave Abruzzese works with their State College Bureau. Dave will speak on their work in the broader context of local news and democracy.
“The decline of local journalism matters for civic engagement and government accountability, and Spotlight’s model is working to fill some of those gaps across Pennsylvania and here in north-central PA.”
LWVCC hopes this community event will help voters learn about a new source of local journalism, and how to support it. The Lodge Conference Room is located above Calvary Harvest Fields Church. Exit the main parking lot to the left and drive up the hill to the Lodge parking. Enter the Lodge building at the front main entrance and follow the signs.
LWVCC registers voters, provides non-partisan candidate information, and many other activities supporting election issues in a non-partisan manner. The League of Women Voters is a grassroots organization working at all levels of government to protect and expand voting rights to ensure that every citizen is represented in America’s democracy. Residents of all political parties are invited to join LWVCC to work for all eligible citizens to be educated, empowered and encouraged to vote.
