BOGGS TOWNSHIP — Brenda’s Tavern on Runville Road in Boggs Township will be closing its doors at the end of the month and owner Brenda Peters said she is selling her liquor license to Sheetz in Wingate.
After 20 years, Peters said the demands of the business along with taking care of her family are too much for her. Add all that to the cost of doing business these days, and she said she was ready to move on, but not without some sadness.
“I have had some great memories here, and have really put a lot of work into the building,” said Peters.
A picture in the bar dates the tavern to at least the 1930s. It was known by many different names before Peters took over two decades ago. She said she renovated the kitchen and bathrooms, swapped a coal furnace for one that runs on oil and had air-conditioning installed.
The bar has nice wood fixtures that she said adds to the “mountain atmosphere.” But despite the renovations, she said she will miss her customers the most.
“I feel like I have gotten to know so many good people. People come in here and they find a place to talk, and I am usually the one they talk to. I think the community is going to miss that,” said Peters.
Clint Walker, of Snowshoe, has been coming to the tavern since he was a little kid. He will miss the place.
“I came in here when I was 7 years old with my father. It just has always been here. I don’t come in often, but when I did, it was always good to see Brenda. Now, with Stover’s closing in Milesburg, there aren’t any places to sit down and relax anymore,” said Walker. Stover’s Tea Room recently closed and sold its liquor license to Snappy’s in Milesburg.
Tammy Romine, of Snow Shoe, feels the same way.
“It is sad to see this place close. You have good people, good communication, great food here. At Sheetz, you don’t have the personal interaction. I think of a place like this as a peaceful place to relax with friends,” said Romine.
Peters will remain the owner of the building and plans to auction off the bar furnishings. She said that maybe when her family concerns calm down she would consider opening a food spot that just sells beer. But in case that never happens, customers will have one last chance to stop at Brenda’s before it closes Saturday, March 31.
