Citizens’ Police Academy applications open
Citizens’ Police Academy offers hands-on insight into local law enforcement, with experiences ranging from crime scene investigations to defense tactics, emergency vehicle demos, and more.
The program runs from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday nights from Monday, Sept. 14, through Monday, Oct. 26. Applications for the 20 available spots are open until Monday, Aug. 24, or until full.

Bird of the Year Poetry Contest winners
The winner of the 2026 Bird of the Year Poetry Contest’s teen category is “To Wear the Red Breast” by Lilliana Akimov. The runner-up was “Songs That Bring Us Together” by Anjana Vangala.
The winner of the adult category was Kathleen Morrow with her entry “The Robins Have Beaten Me to the Spring Berries.”
For the Bird of the Year Poetry contest, Centre Region residents were asked to submit poetry inspired by the American Robin and its impact on the community.
