STATE COLLEGE — Nittany Valley Youth Basketball held a free Adapted Basketball Clinic for athletes with disabilities on Saturday, March 22.
Nittany Valley Youth has been holding these clinics since 2018 when Sophia La Porta suggested the idea to her dad, Thomas La Porta, because of her interest in becoming a special education teacher.
This year, the event was the largest it has been with 20 athletes ranging from 5 years of age to 50. The clinic also boasted over 30 volunteer coaches made up of former players and coaches over the last 10 years.
“Creating accessible events allows our community to come together as it is meant to. This is everyone’s favorite event,” Abbie La Porta, one of the coaches, said.
“The participants and girls who coach it really look forward to seeing each other year after year because they have become friends.”
The event was held at the gym in Our Lady Of Victory Catholic School after the school donated the gym time to the clinic because of the cause.
Activities ranged from games of HORSE, a dribbling obstacle course and a relay race, amongst other things. Pictures of the clinic can be found on the Nittany Valley Youth Basketball Facebook page.
