UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Philharmonic Orchestra, part of the Penn State School of Music in the College of Arts and Architecture and under the direction of Gerardo Edelstein, will present a program of Romantic masterworks at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5, in Eisenhower Auditorium.
The concert opens with the rousing Overture to Der Freischütz by Carl Maria von Weber, a cornerstone of early German Romantic opera celebrated for its dramatic energy and vivid orchestral color. The program continues with Edward MacDowell’s Piano Concerto No. 2, a richly lyrical and fiery showcase for piano, featuring a captivating performance by this year’s Concerto Competition co-winner Yanjun Huang. Concluding the concert is Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, a towering masterpiece of symphonic literature whose passionate intensity and triumphant finale secured Brahms’ place among the great symphonists.
