UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State is rolling out updated Nittany Lion logos and signature marks to modernize the brand of the campus’s beloved mascot. Merchandise featuring the Nittany Lions’ new look will be available on Friday, Oct. 4, just in time for PSU’s home game against UCLA.
While the changes to the famous mascot’s branding may not be wildly different in appearance, the updated signature marks and logos feature new colorways, imprint options and poses. According to the university, this will provide more merchandising opportunities for Penn State fans.
“The Nittany Lion mascot has been a mainstay to the image of Penn State for 120 years, embodying the ‘We Are’ spirit and cultivating pride from the classroom to the athletics fields,” Rachel Pell, vice president for strategic communications said. “I’m excited to introduce to the Penn State community a fresh take on our beloved Nittany Lion, especially the highly requested signature, which can now be shared with the broader Penn State audience through stickers and decals.”
The original Nittany Lion mascot was formed over 120 years ago in 1904 and has since gone through many updates and changes including the addition of the blue and white scarf and the loss of its hairy mane.
The product line featuring the signature mark and logos will debut at State College’s The Family Clothesline on Friday, Oct. 4, with autograph signings and photo opportunities. For sale, there will be mugs, stickers, decals, hats, giftware and more. After Friday’s launch products will be available across varying retail locations that carry Penn State Merchandise.
