STATE COLLEGE — Playing in the First Round of the PIAA 3A Boys’ Volleyball Championships, visiting Penn-Trafford upset District 6 champion State College, 3-0, on Tuesday, May 3, in the State College North Gym.
The 14-7 Warriors, the No. 3 seed out of District 7, got off to a good start in the match with a 25-17 win in the first set.
The Little Lions came back with strong showing in a very close second set, but Penn-Trafford was able to hold on late and came away with a 25-21 win.
State College’s Derrick Campbell almost brought the Little Lions all the way back with a kill that made the score 24-21. Trafford, though, scored the next point and took the crucial set.
In Set 3, the teams battled back and forth and were tied coming down the stretch at 16, but Trafford took control with six consecutive points to take a 22-16 lead. From there, the Warriors closed out the set 25-19, and the match 3-0.
The Little Lions came into the match as the No. 1 seed from D6 and with a record of 9-5.
They were led in the match in kills by Derrick Campbell with seven, Max Henning with six and Lucas Keiter with four.
Amir Cyrus led in assists with nine, followed by Camptell with eight, and Daniel Stefanovich, Keiter and Campbell led in service wins.
Ty Miller had 13 digs, followed by Keiter with 11 and Cyrus with five. Stefanovich and Campbell each had two blocks.
The Loss ended the Lions’ season with a final record of 9-6.
Penn Trafford will move to the state quarterfinals on Saturday, June 7, against either 7-1 North Allegheny or 3-5 Palmyra.
