PHILIPSBURG — The state Dept. of Transportation recently placed a radar-controlled speed display board on U.S. Route 322 in Rush Township and on Route 144 in Milesburg Borough. Both communities are located in Centre County.
The sign in Rush Township is intended to remind drivers of commercial vehicles to obey the posted truck speed limit on a section of roadway with a significant downward grade.
The board faces eastbound traffic on Route 322 at the top of Port Matilda Mountain, between Hanah Furnace Road and Sandy Ridge Trail, in an area zoned 30 miles per hour for commercial vehicles.
The other board faces northbound traffic between Eagle Street and Water Street in Milesburg, in a 35 mile per hour zone. It is intended to remind drivers to obey the posted speed limit and reduce speeding, a common type of aggressive driving behavior.
Both boards utilize radar to determine the speeds of oncoming traffic and posts them to the lighted section of the sign
The boards will remain in these locations for four to six weeks.
