PLEASANT GAP — The Scouting for America Troop 66 in Pleasant Gap is scheduled to hike dozens of miles at the Philmont Scout Reservation in Cimmaron, New Mexico, for the first time in 15 years.
Seven scouts and four adults will embark on a 60-mile hike over the course of 12 days at Philmont. The troop and adults have been preparing for the trek scheduled for June 2026, by completing practice hikes.
Troop 66 will host a spaghetti dinner at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, at the American Legion Post 867 in Pleasant Gap to help raise funds for the Philmont trek and other camping endeavors. The cost for the spaghetti dinner is $14 per person and it is open to the public with a to-go option available.
Formerly known as the Boy Scouts of America, The Scouting for America Troop 66 was founded in 1942 and is actively chartered by the American Legion Post 867, in Pleasant Gap. The troop currently has 14 scouts.
“Scouting is committed to fostering leadership, character development, community membership, service and responsibility using the outdoors as a classroom to hone skills,” a press release from Troop 66 noted.
The Philmont Scout Reservation is Scouting America’s oldest high-adventure base with more than 140,000 acres of wilderness. Located in the mountains of northern New Mexico, the ranch offers scouts the opportunity to conduct long treks while experiencing historical sites, such as petroglyphs left by indigenous populations.
