Punxsutawney Phil greets fans in State College

Gannon Brungard

STATE COLLEGE — The Press Cider and Craft Beverage Tap House in State College was the place to be on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 17, where the world-famous prognosticator of prognosticators Punxsutawney Phil made an appearance.

The famous weather-predicting groundhog is celebrated every Feb. 2 for predicting whether early spring is on the way or if winter will linger for six more weeks, depending entirely on whether he sees his shadow.

Phil attracted crowds of all ages, from young children to college students, locals and everyone in between, all eager to catch a glimpse of the famous ground burrowing marmot. The excitement was so great that visitors often waited in line for around two hours just for the chance to meet him.

Inside the taphouse, visitors could watch the movie “Groundhog Day” while enjoying the atmosphere, and adults had the option to sample nine different ciders on tap, making their time at The Press both entertaining and relaxing.

Phil is expected to make his annual appearance on Gobbler’s Knob in Jefferson County in the wee morning hours of Feb. 2.
