R-VOICE celebrates 40 years of supporting victims of interpersonal violence

Centre County Gazette

STATE COLLEGE — R-VOICE recently celebrated 40 years of supporting survivors, promoting advocacy, and educating the Penn State community on the prevention of power-based interpersonal violence.

Sabrina Chapman, the Center’s first director, along with the Center’s second Director, Dr. Peggy Lorah, each served as director for 16 years and attended the celebration

At the event, R-VOICE launched its new Survivor Support Fund for students. Funds are now being raised to cover critical expenses that students may have in the aftermath of a sexual violence or relationship violence incident. This fund was created to meet those urgent needs quickly.

The R-VOICE Center also announced its two newest staff members.

Sophia Mills, MPS officially joined the team as Associate Director on Oct. 6. Mills brings more than six years of experience in power-based interpersonal violence prevention, education, and survivor-centered advocacy. Her previous roles include serving as Program Coordinator for Outreach and Education with R-VOICE and as an Advocate at the Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County.

Mills stated, “I feel genuinely honored to step into this role and continue contributing to the work that supports, empowers, and uplifts our campus community. I have always believed that education and outreach are powerful tools to help end violence, and together our voices can make that change possible.”

Kimisse King was welcomed as the new Survivor Advocate and Case Manager in September. King brings nearly two decades of deeply rooted experience supporting survivors of power-based interpersonal violence. Her work spans crisis intervention, legal advocacy, Protection Order assistance, and survivor-centered support across multiple systems.

King said, “I’m incredibly excited to be joining R-VOICE in this new role as a Survivor Advocate/Case Manager. I’m deeply passionate about this work and truly committed to supporting survivors. Advocacy is not just a job for me—it’s a calling. I believe in empowering survivors to reclaim their voices and helping them feel seen, heard, and supported throughout their healing journey. I’m honored to be a part of a team that shares this mission.”
