ROCKHILL FURNACE — The 150-year-old, narrow-gauge East Broad Top Railroad continues to surprise and delight railfans, and now that includes soft-adventure enthusiasts.

The EBT, via Allegheny Rail Riders, is now offering self-pedal and electric-powered railcars on a journey along the historic tracks. The inauguration of this new rail adventure just launched in September, and trips are scheduled for all weekends in October, including all Fridays and some Wednesdays and Thursdays (ideal for fall foliage viewing). Departures are at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

The one-hour, three-mile round-trip rail bike ride follows a quiet stretch of track removed from the rushing, modern world. Along the way, your self-powered or electric railcar will pass the evocative ruins of the Rockhill Iron Furnace, roll adjacent to the peaceful waters of Blacklog Creek, and travel through lush farmland and shaded forests that showcase the natural beauty of the Appalachian Mountains.

This soft-adventure experience is ideal for couples, families, and outdoor enthusiasts. The custom-built rail bikes are equipped with an e-assist motor to assist along the journey if needed. Each rail bike seats up to four guests. The first and last rail bikes of each departure will have one Rail Bike pilot seated. Groups of more than four will be split across multiple bikes.

Tickets for the rail bikes cost $20. Soon there will be a combination railbike, train excursion and shop tour. Dates, tickets and costs are yet to be announced.

Reservations are strongly suggested, as the railroad’s renaissance is drawing national and international attention. For information and reservations, visit www.eastbroadtop.com or call 814-447-3285.
