Rams edge Mounties in boys soccer action

SPRING MILLS – The Penns Valley boys soccer team went 2-1 in three games in three consecutive days, including wins at Philipsburg-Osceola, 2-0, on Sept. 24 and Johnstown, 6-1, on Sept. 25 at home. 

The Rams (7-4-2) also suffered a 1-0 loss at Bishop Carroll on Sept. 23. And then four days after the Johnstown win, they battled to a 3-3 tie with Hollidaysburg at home. 

Against P-O, the Rams got goals from Leo Martin Villanueva in the 11th minute and Luke Ruoff in the 68th minute. Goalkeeper Owen Robb made three saves, while P-O goalkeeper Matt Thompson had 10 saves. 

Ruoff scored two goals against Johnstown. Deon Decker, Ethan Roland, Liam Merritt and Kyus Kimler also scored goals. 

“Three matches in three days – not an easy task to do whatsoever,” Penns Valley coach Brian Markle posted on Facebook. 

In the double overtime tie with the Golden Tigers, Ruoff scored on a penalty kick. Kimler scored the second goal, while Martin Villanueva tied the game with a goal. 

“Beating and or getting a draw with Hollidaysburg – this is the first for the Penns Valley boys soccer program,” Markle posted on Facebook. “Truthfully I cannot be any prouder of this TEAM!”

BELLEFONTE BOYS

The Bellefonte boys team rolled to a 5-2 win over Central Cambria on Sept. 24 at home behind a three-goal performance from star player Conelle Stabinger.

Stabinger scored his first goal at 7:23 thanks to an assist from Ian Orr. He scored again at 10:41. Stabinger nailed his third goal at the 75:09 mark.

John Servant and Oliver Thornburg scored the other goals for the Red Raiders (9-1).

The Red Raiders rolled to an 8-0 win on Sept. 22 at Johnstown.

PHILIPSBURG-OSCEOLA BOYS

In addition to the loss to Penns Valley, Philipsburg-Osceola earned its second win of the season by nipping Chestnut Ridge, 2-1, on Sept. 25 at home. The Mounties also lost a close one, 3-2, on Sept. 23 at Penn Cambria.

Sawyer Sites scored both goals for P-O against Chestnut Ridge. Sites scored unassisted on his first goal and was assisted by Cale McDowell on his second goal in the 60th minute. Ridge’s Jackson Walkarch scored in the 45th minute.

P-O’s Matt Thompson made six saves, while Chestnut Ridge’s Josh Hawseme made four saves.

McDowell scored with 8 seconds left in the first half of the Penn Cambria game. Sites tied the score at 2-2 when he booted a goal with 26:18 left. Penn Cambria’s Nick Marshall scored his second goal at 19:50 in what turned out to be the game winner.  

BALD EAGLE AREA BOYS

The Bald Eagle Area boys team suffered a 2-1 overtime loss at Bedford in a heartbreaker on Sept. 23.

Losing 1-0, BEA’s Connor Maney scored off an assist from Paul Hacker with approximately 6 minutes left in the game. Bedford’s Lincoln Sipes then scored a goal in overtime. 

“What a game – unbelievable soccer unbelievable play by us tonight,” BEA coach Jason Bair said. “We need to keep this up. I can’t express how proud I am of the team and how well we played tonight. We are gonna keep this moving in the right direction way to go guys.”

BEA goalkeeper Henry Bacon made 11 saves.

STATE COLLEGE BOYS

The State College boys suffered a 3-0 loss on Sept. 24 at Central Dauphin, but the Little Lions rebounded with a 3-0 victory over Chambersburg on Sept. 29 at home.

State College was 9-4-2 after the win. 

ST. JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC ACADEMY BOYS

The St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy boys team lost road games to Millersburg, 3-0, on Sept. 24 and to Mifflinburg, 5-1, on Sept. 27. 

BELLEFONTE GIRLS

The Bellefonte girls team captured its sixth shutout and third in a row in a 2-0 blanking of Central Cambria on Sept. 24 at home.

Brooke Whitman and Kaylee Knepp scored the goals, and Brinley DeWeese had an assist. Goalkeeper Ronni Spotts snagged six saves for the Lady Red Raiders (6-4). 

STATE COLLEGE GIRLS

The State College girls team suffered a 3-1 loss to Central Dauphin on Sept. 24 at home and a 4-1 loss at Chambersburg on Sept. 29. 

Leah Sampsel scored State College’s lone goal, while Natalia Andrews got the assist. Central Dauphin got goals from Cameron Ofak, Rylen Fraker and Madeline Long. 

BALD EAGLE AREA GIRLS

The Bald Eagle Area girls team ran into a buzzsaw in a 13-0 loss at Bedford on Sept. 23. 

Bedford had a 26-1 advantage in shots on target and 8-1 edge in corners over the Lady Eagles (1-8-1).

“Bedford is a great team,” BEA coach Jared Moore said. “They do a lot of things well. They make you pay for defensive mistakes and miscues. We just had too many today.”
