Romig’s late goal lifts Lady Rams over Bald Eagle Area

Todd Irwin

SPRING MILLS — Penns Valley and Bald Eagle Area girls soccer teams battled back and forth until PV’s Ellie Romig scored at the 76:29 mark of a tied game to lift the Lady Rams to a 5-4 win on Sept. 8.

Romig scored two goals, as did teammate Ellie Dinges. BEA’s Addison Tice also scored two goals and assisted on goals by Savanna Albright and Madison Donley goal. Penns Valley’s Kiersten Fetterolf scored a goal.

Penns Valley’s Emma Marks made nine saves, while BEA freshman Cami Walker had 18 stops. The Rams had a 23-13 edge in shots on target.

“The game was back and forth for the first 10 minutes, but we had some defensive breakdowns that cost us and we were down 4-2 at one point,” BEA coach Jared Moore said.

“Cami Walker was outstanding between the pipes, making five or six diving saves, including saving a breakaway. In the end, too many defensive miscues and trouble clearing the ball hurt us, as well as the speed of the Penns Valley forwards.”

BEA captured its first win, 2-1, at Chestnut Ridge on Sept. 4 – two days after the Lady Eagles lost to Westmont Hilltop, 1-0, at home.

Tice scored both goals against Chestnut Ridge, notching the eventual game winner off an assist from Albright at the 74:44 mark. Tice scored her first goal in a scoreless game after getting the dish from Ariana Mayes at 52:09.

Ridge’s Kirsten Kohler tied the game at 61:50. It was the only boot that got by Walker, who made six saves. The Lady Eagles had a 21-7 edge in shots on target.

“We controlled possession well tonight,” Moore said. “We created a ton of scoring chances. The defense was great tonight.

“Addie Tice and Savanna Albright led the charge. They connected well and Savanna fed two great balls that Addie finished perfectly. Just a total team victory tonight. I was very proud of them for pulling out the win after Chestnut Ridge tied it up.”

BEA sophomore goalkeeper Emily Steffan had 12 saves against Westmont Hilltop.

Penns Valley went 0-2 in its two other games during the week, including a 2-1 overtime loss at Central Cambria on Sept. 4. The Lady Rams also lost to Bedford, 8-0, on Sept. 2 at home.

Romig scored in the second half against Central Cambria, who won with a goal from Kaydence Sinclair with 1:44 left in overtime.

Goalkeeper Henry Bacon made six saves in the shutout for BEA (3-1).

“That is our first shutout of the season. I’m happy about that,” BEA coach Jason Bair said. “We are proud of how the guys played tonight, especially the second half. They played an outstanding second half and held possession well, and we had many, many scoring opportunities.”

The only goal scored in the Westmont game was a Luke Wesner goal at 41:56. Bacon made three saves.

“It was a hard-fought physical game,” Bair said. “We were able to outshoot them 8-6, but we were not able to put one in the back of the net. The team played hard.”
