BOALSBURG — Rowe’s Research Runners’ 10th annual Walk, Run, Roll will be held Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. at the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg. RRR raises funds, builds awareness, and fosters connection for people living with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, dysautonomia, long COVID, and related chronic fatigue illnesses.
The event, which also has a virtual option, invites participants to walk, run, or roll — based on their abilities — around the ½-mile loop at the museum. This year’s event will also feature Alliance of Heroic Hearts, the Classic Cones ice cream truck, face painting by Faces and Spaces Artistry, and entertainment by Fraser Street Saxes. Registration is $20 for in-person participants and $15 for virtual participants. Participants 12 and under are free.
RRR began with State College resident Emily Steffensmeier Miller’s wish to give back to Dr. Peter Rowe, former director of the ME/CFS and Related Disorders Program at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, who helped her go from bedridden to living a fuller life. What started as a birthday fundraiser grew into Rowe’s Research Runners in 2017, in partnership with Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. RRR has raised more than $475,000 since its founding and grown to include in-person and virtual participants nationwide.
Seventy million people worldwide suffer from some form of dysautonomia, in which the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary bodily functions like breathing, heartbeat, and digestion, does not function properly. Long COVID was recently added to this family of illnesses because it causes symptoms similar to ME/CFS, including fatigue and brain fog, as well as other debilitating problems in the heart, brain, lungs, gut, and other organs.
