SC sweeps Central Dauphin East

In some ways the State College boys’ volleyball team has been playing non-stop since their season began, and most of the matches have been on the road.

The Little Lions finally got a breather of sorts, with only two matches over the past week, and no tournaments in which to play. They also won’t have much time on the bus in their near future.

State College began a run of three straight matches in North Gym — and six of their next seven events at home — as it scored a sweep of Central Dauphin East and was swept by Central Dauphin.

They delivered a dozen aces in a 25-16, 25-14, 25-20 sweep of the Panthers. Brayden Kuruzovich paced the team with 12 kills, six digs, three blocks and three aces. Sam Li added seven kills, Kieran Leahey posted 18 assists and four aces, and Jet True also had three aces.

“It was good to get a win,” coach Larry Campbell said. “Everybody got in and had an opportunity to play, which is always nice as a coach.”

Life wasn’t as easy against Central Dauphin, the state’s top-ranked Class 3A team in the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association weekly poll.

Li led the way with six kills and Kuruzovich added four kills, three aces and six assists during the 25-16, 25-13, 25-15 loss April 19. Leahey distributed nine assists.

“The second half starts with CD in our place,” Campbell said. “They are the best team in the state — no doubt after seeing the (other top) teams at the last few events.”

The Little Lions (7-12) stay at home April 21, hosting Altoona, a team State College outlasted in five sets at the end of March.
