State College girls now 13-3 after big wins over Carlisle and Chambersburg

CENTRE COUNTY — The State College Lady Little Lions basketball team took care of Mid Penn Commonwealth foes Carlisle and Chambersburg and chalked up their 12th and 13th victories of the season.

SC faced Carlisle at home on Friday, Jan. 24, and quickly shot out to a 20-point lead after the first two quarters on the way to a 62-35 win.

The Lions kept the heat on in the second half by holding the Thundering Herd to just 17 points and steadily pulling away.

In all, SC put eight players in the scoring column led by McKenna Whitehurst with 14 points, Sienna Wilson with 11, and Jessica Hawbaker with 10.

It was more of the same at Chambersburg on Monday, Jan. 27.

The Lions got off to a 16-point early lead and then settled things with a 25-7 run in the third quarter on the way to a 63-27 victory.

Sienna Wilson, who led the team with 15 points, led the third-quarter charge with 10 points, including two 3-pointers. Hawbaker, with 14 points, and Sheree Wilson, with 11, were also in double-figures for the Lions.

The Chambersburg win was the 13th of the season for State College and 8th in the Mid Penn.

The team is presently in second place in the conference behind Altoona with conference games now coming up against Cumberland Valley and Central Dauphin. There are also non-league games at Williamsport and at McDowell.

SJCA GIRLS TAKE WINS OVER JUNIATA AND EAST JUNIATA

With three games left on the schedule, the Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy girls’ basketball team is closing in on a record season.

The WolfPack are now 16-1 overall for the year after two wins in the past week.

On Monday, Jan. 27, SJCA raced away from Juniata in Mifflintown by a score of 73-34, and then on the 27th, it did almost exactly the same thing against East Juniata with a 69-34 victory.

The two wins put the team solidly in first place in the Tri-Valley Conference with a 10-0 record and on the way to one of the best years ever for the school.

Against East Juniata on Monday, SJCA ran up 24 first-quarter points and then followed that with another 20 in the second to take a commanding halftime lead.

Led by Lauren Himes 16 points, the team put eight players in the scoring column and also got double digits from Naomi Crispin with 13, Alexia Luckovich with 11 and Jacee Cunningham with 10.

The team is presently ranked No. 2 in the District 6, Single-A bracket just behind Bishop Guilfoyle. SJCA still has games remaining against Newport, Line Mountain and Juniata Valley.

PENNS VALLEY SPRINTS AWAY FROM BELLEFONTE

The Penns Valley Rams girls’ basketball team started on fire at home against Bellefonte on Thursday, Jan. 23, and raced out to a 30-point halftime lead and a 70-23 victory.

The Rams scored 41 points in the first half and coasted to their 8th win of the year against seven losses.

Elle Dinges led PV with 14 points, Ellie Romig had 13, Paige Johnson scored 11 and Sydnie Dalton came in with 10 as the Rams put nine players altogether in the scoring column.

The win moved PV into the No. 4 seed in the District 6, AAA Rankings ahead of Cambria Heights and behind Marion Center.

The Rams have games against Mount Union, Somerset and Central Martinsburg coming up in January.

For Bellefonte, the loss was the 13th for the Lady Raiders with games against Hollidaysburg, Bedford and Clearfield coming in the next week.
