STATE COLLEGE — In late October, the State College Area High girls volleyball team took time to visit The Jared Box Project and create boxes for local children.
The event was hosted and set up by Jane Adams and Brower Realtors. Adams has a daughter on the team and supplied a lot of the toys and supplies for the boxes. Other teammates also helped by bringing supplies.
The girls team made 25 boxes in total and donated many more toys for future Jared Boxes.
“One of the words we like to use within our culture is servitude and how do we best serve each other as teammates, how do we serve others within the school system and how do we best serve our community,” volleyball coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “I want our players to be role models within the State College community. With the help of Jane Adams, we felt that the Jared Box project was a great way for us to give back to our community and hopefully brighten and bring some joy in your hospital patient’s day.”
The Jared Box Project began in 2001 by the children of Our Lady of Victory School in State College. The project is in honor of Jared, who battled cancer before eventually dying. Since 2001, more than 1,000,000 Jared Boxes have been made.
The Jared Box Projects mission is “to entertain and put a smile on the faces of children in the hospital,” according to the organization’s website.
Locally, Jared Boxes are provided at Mount Nittany Health, Gray’s Woods Surgical Center, CVIM, Penn Highlands State College, The Meadows and at Med Express.
The State College girls volleyball team is 12-4-1 overall and ranked No. 10 in PA. It recently beat Altoona in the 4A tournament championships.
