State College rises to the top in the Carlisle XC Invitational

CARLISLE — The State College girls and boys both had outstanding performances at the Carlisle Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 28, in Carlisle.

The girls finished fifth out of 42 teams, but they were the top representative of a team from Pennsylvania, while the boys came in third behind Tatnall of Delaware and LaSalle College High School from Philadelphia out of a field of 54 teams.

State College’s Devon Jackson placed seventh overall in the girls 5K race with a time of 18:16, which was the fastest 5K time for a State College girl in over 20 years.

In a field of 296 runners, Devyani Wadhia finished 32nd, Julia Bigger placed 38th, Evie Younkin was 61st, Carolyn Frank was 88th, Silvie Hutchinson was 105th and Molly Dell, 112th.

In the final race of the day, the boys varsity challenge, only 13 points separated the top three teams with State College coming in third at 144. 

Theo Oppermann finished fourth overall with a time of 15:38, and teammate Owen Coughlin finished 21st overall.

Those two were followed by Stephen Fowler, 27th, Luke Bradbury, 35th, Kyle Fritzsche, 58th, Griffin Selber, 85th and Owen Viglione, 179th.

The State College teams do not have any competitions this week and will be looking forward to the Mid Penn championships scheduled for Saturday, Oct.12.
