STATE COLLEGE — In action for the first time in almost a month because of postponements and cancellations, the State College Area High School swim team showed no ill effects in sweeping visiting Williamsport on Saturday, Jan. 13, as Gabby Siekman won two girls events and Grace Carrington, Leo Garlicki, Trevor Martin and Todd Siekman each won an individual event and swam on a winning relay.
Gabby Siekman triumphed in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke in the Lady Little Lions’ 123-63 victory. Her time in the former event was 56.82 seconds. She clocked in at 1 minute, 13.93 seconds in the breaststroke.
Carrington brought home first-place points by timing 5:34.87 in the 500 freestyle. She also anchored the 400 freestyle relay team that included Katelyn Watschke, Molly Staniar and Alayna Ohlson to a time of 3:51.80.
State won the girls 200 medley relay, as well, with Sawyer Barshinger, Hannah Kifer, Quinn Castro and Kelly Brownstead completing the event in a time of 2:01.99. Lady Little Lions’ Alex Hein and Ditta Kowalik were first in the 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle with times of 2:22.59 and 25.87, respectively.
The State College boys took advantage of their superior depth to emerge with a 98-79 victory, taking first in five events.
Garlicki, Martin and Todd Siekman were joined by Hudson Pell-Gibson to take first in the 200 free relay in a time of 1:34.47. Garlicki, meanwhile, was first individually in the 200 IM with a 2:02.97, while Martin touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle in 51.48 and Todd Siekman left the field in his wake in the 200 freestyle with a 1:56.43.
David Ulmer scored State’s other boys win, completing the 500 freestyle in 5:18.96.
Bellefonte sweeps Penns Valley
TYRONE — Katelyn Packer swam the eighth-fastest girls 200 individual medley — 2:23.27 — and also won the 100 freestyle and was part of the winning teams in the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay as the Bellefonte girls swept county rival Penns Valley and host Tyrone on Monday, Jan. 15.
The Lady Raiders defeated the Lady Rams, 82-43. The score against Tyrone was 88-52.
Packer’s time in the individual freestyle was 57.84. She was joined by Kiaha McCool, Addie Pringle and Sarah Litten in the medley relay, where they recorded a time of 2:01.54. Packer, McCool, Pringle and Grace Rossman notched a 4:00.77 in the free relay.
McCool also won a pair of individual events as the Lady Raiders moved to 8-2 overall and 8-1 in the Laurel Highlands Conference. She finished the 100 butterfly in 1:02.35 and the 100 backstroke in 59.72.
Pringle and Rossman were individual winners in the 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle, respectively. Pringle’s time was 26.74. Rossman clocked 2:20.91.
Sydney Fetters rounded out the first-place efforts for the Bellefonte girls with a 6:16.07 in the 500 freestyle.
Penns Valley freshman Mila Klena recorded a 1:13.64 to beat out Pringle for first in the 100 breaststroke. The Lady Rams fell 70-56 against Tyrone.
Cedric Bagwell won the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke individually and was part of the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays to power the Bellefonte boys over Penns Valley, 58-36. Tyrone was an 83-53 victor over the Red Raiders while topping Penns Valley, 96-34.
The Raiders are 2-8 overall and 2-7 in the LHAC.
Bagwell’s time in the individual medley was 2:36.27, while he completed the backstroke in 1:08.31.
Carter Boone, Isaiah Johnson and Turner Malik joined Bagwell in the relays. They teamed for a time of 1:52.92 in the medley and 1:42.22 in the 200 freestyle.
Boone prevailed in the 100 butterfly with a 54.54, while Johnson won the 50 freestyle with a 23.82.
Penns Valley’s Liam Quigley won both of his individual events. He swam 1:02.46 to clip Boone in the 100 breaststroke. His time in the 200 freestyle was 1:55.61.
Raider teams 6th at Arctic Swim
CLEARFIELD — Boone and Johnson each scored two silver medals and were part of a bronze-medal relay to highlight Bellefonte’s performance at the Arctic Swim Classic on Jan. 13.
Boone was second in the 100 freestyle with a 50.26 and the 200 freestyle with a 1:52.12, while Johnson finished runner-up in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:03.46 and the 200 IM with a 2:10.46.
Boone’s 100 freestyle time was seventh-best in school history.
Boone, Johnson, Malik and Bagwell joined up for a 1:42.74 in the 200 freestyle relay. Those four also came in fourth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:50.97.
The Red Raiders placed sixth as a team out of 11 schools in the meet, scoring 122 points. Clearfield won the meet with 325 points and five gold medals.
Packer accounted for a pair of silver medals to power the Bellefonte girls to a sixth-place showing with 131 team points; Brookville scored 432 to win the team title.
Packer swam 2:02.86 in the 200 freestyle and 1:02.28 in the 100 butterfly — her freestyle time moved up the Lady Raider all-time charts to No. 6.
Pringle, meanwhile, garnered bronze in the 50 freestyle with a 27.07.
The Lady Raiders finished fourth in both the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay. Packer, Pringle, Fetters and Rossman notched a 2:02.08 in the medley. Packer, Pringle, Litten and Sarah Moretz had a 4:10.36 in the freestyle team event.
Fetters place fourth individually in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:08.66.
Lady Raiders sweep Richland
HOLLIDAYSBURG — Bellefonte’s girls won all 11 events in an 86-71 defeat of Richland at Hollidaysburg Area High School on Wednesday, Jan. 10.
Bellefonte did not score against the host school, having competed with Hollidaysburg in a triangular two days earlier. All three teams did swim at the meet, though.
Packer finished first in the 200 freestyle with a 2:13.73 and the 100 breaststroke with a 1:19.45 in addition to joining Fetters, Litten and Rossman for first in the 200 free relay with a 1:53.11. The Lady Raiders also topped Richland in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays but timed behind Hollidaysburg.
Pringle touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle at 2:13.73 and in the 100 breaststroke at 1:19.45. Fetters topped the field in the 100 backstroke with a 1:09.11, as did Rossman in the 100 freestyle with a 1:02.57.
Moretz had the best time against Richland in the 200 IM. The backstroke results were unavailable.
The Red Raiders were trimmed by Richland, 55-53, despite Johnson’s firsts in the 200 IM (2:08.38) and the 100 breaststroke (1:02.43). Johnson also timed 1:52.98 to place first with Bagwell, Boone and Malik in the 200 medley relay and 1:43.72 with the same trio to take the 200 free relay.
Boone bested all the competition in the 100 freestyle with a 52.14 time.
PV has 3 double winners
EBENSBURG — Penns Valley’s Klena, Quigley and Charlotte Delaney all won a pair of individual swims in an LHAC triangular with Somerset at Central Cambria on Jan. 10.
Delaney posted the top times of 2:06.60 in the girls 200 freestyle and 1:07.38 in the 100 butterfly, while Klena matched her teammate with a 2:24.60 in the 200 IM and a 1:14.70 in the 100 breaststroke.
Quigley scored firsts with a 50.67 in the boys 100 freestyle and a 22.57 in the 50 freestyle.
Penns Valley was swept in the team competition. The Lady Rams fell 113-46 to Somerset and 106-55 to Central Cambria. The Rams dropped a 113-39 decision to Central Cambria while dropping a 101-41 verdict against Somerset.
