STATE COLLEGE — State College senior Charlie Yartz, a 6-foot-6 forward, scored his 1,000th career point in his team’s 70-64 loss to Central Dauphin at home on Wednesday, Feb. 5.
Yartz became the 15th player in State College history to pass the 1,000-point career scoring milestone, and he did it playing for both the Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy WolfPack and the Little Lions.
Yartz played his first two years at SJCA before moving to State College before his junior season.
“He actually scored the points on two free throws. Not the most exciting play in the world, but just before that he had a really cool tip-back dunk that brought him to within two,” State College head coach Brian Scholly said.
“This was an accumulation of his two years at SJCA and here, and he has had four really good years across those two schools. He has been a key contributor for the past two years playing in different roles. He was kind of a newcomer last season, and this year he has been a senior co-captain.
“Along with Reed Melvin, Charlie has been a driver of our offense this year, and both of them have had really strong years. This is an awesome accomplishment for Charlie.”
Yartz and the Little Lions are rounding out their regular season and beginning to prepare for the District 6 6A playoffs set to begin within the next week.
They are presently ranked No. 1 in the D6 bracket and will play in the championship game on Friday, Feb. 21, at Mount Aloysius College.
