STATE COLLEGE — It hasn’t taken freshman Sienna Wilson long to make her mark for the State College Area High School girls basketball team.
Wilson put back a missed 3-pointer to win the Lady Little Lions’ season opener against Loyalsock, 60-58, on Tuesday, Dec. 5, then came back and made the all-tournament team as State finished runner-up in its own Skip Coleman Memorial Tipoff Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 9.
Wilson tossed in a game-high 20 points as the Lady Little Lions scored a 46-36 win over Central Bucks West in the first round of the tournament on Friday, Dec. 8. She scored 6 in Spring-Ford’s 53-46 victory in the championship game after scoring 16 in the victory against Loyalsock.
Diana Tsarnakova and Shereen Wilson came up with 9 points apiece versus Loyalsock, while Carley Donnell and Jess Hawbaker contributed 8 each. State College was down 1 heading into the fourth quarter before coming back to pull out the win.
Loyalsock’s Alaina Dadzie netted a game-high 27 points.
Sierra Wilson scored 6 as State jumped out to a 13-3 lead after one quarter in its win over CB West, where she added 8 points in the Lady Little Lions’ 18-point third quarter.
In the tournament final, however, State College fell behind by 7 points heading into the second period, and Spring-Ford was able to keep that margin over the Lady Little Lions most of the rest of the way. Donnell fronted State College with 15 points on five 3-pointers.
Anna Azzara and Katie Tiffan combined for 29 points for Spring-Ford.
St. Joseph’s
BOALSBURG — St. Joseph’s ran its record to 3-0 as Naomi Crispin and Aubrey Yartz combined for 73 points in home wins over Midd-West on Dec. 5 and Greenwood on Dec. 11.
Crispin erupted for 28 points in the WolfPack’s 65-39 victory over Greenwood, while Yartz also had a big game with 20 points.
St. Joseph’s carried every quarter, jumping out to a 17-5 lead after one and putting up 23 points in the fourth.
Greenwood’s Sophia Jezewski finished with 19 points.
Alexia Luckovich joined Crispin and Yartz in double figures against Midd-West with 10 points as St. Joseph’s prevailed, 56-14. Yartz topped the Wolves with 15 points. Crispin also scored 10.
St. Joseph’s had 44 points by halftime of the win.
Penns Valley
TYRONE — Penns Valley split a pair of Laurel Highlands Conference matchups, notching a 45-40 victory at Tyrone on Dec. 6, when Elle Dinges and Scotty Dinges combined for 31 points.
The Lady Rams dropped a 58-33 decision to visiting Westmont Hilltop on Dec. 8.
The Dingeses scored 9 of Penns Valley’s 14 fourth-quarter points to help the Lady Rams hold on against Tyrone. Penns Valley had just a 2-point lead heading to the fourth quarter.
Elle Dinges finished with 17 points. Scotty Dinges scored 14.
Laney Woomer’s 15 points paced Tyrone, while Alayna Green contributed 11.
The Lady Rams were held to single digits, though, in three of the four quarters by Westmont, last year’s District 6 Class 3A runner-up. Elle Dinges topped Penns Valley with 8 points, while Ellie Romig added 7.
Westmont junior all-state player Christiana Gordon fired in 34 points for the Lady Hilltoppers, including the 1,000th point of her career.
Bellefonte
BELLEFONTE — Bellefonte was still left looking for its first triumph of the season after two starts following a 53-17 LHAC setback at the hands of visiting Bishop McCort on Dec. 8.
Madison Ripka was the leading scorer for the Lady Raiders for the second straight game, accounting for 12 points, all on 3-pointers.
Bald Eagle Area
WINGATE — Bald Eagle Area led Bedford with two minutes left in the third quarter but wasn’t able to hang on and dropped its LHAC tilt on Dec. 8, 35-28.
Taylor Habovick and Sybil Thompson led the way for the Lady Eagles with 12 points apiece. BEA’s Gabbie Perry pulled down nine rebounds.
Bald Eagle was held to 3 points in the second half of Mike Habovick’s Lady Eagle coaching debut on Dec. 6 as the Lady Eagles fell at perennial District 6 power Bishop Guilfoyle, 67-16.
Thompson and Addisyn Burns fronted the Lady Eagles with 6 points apiece. Maurie Querry led three Lady Marauder scorers in double figures with 17.
Philipsburg-Osceola
PHILIPSBURG — Khendyl Sharrer hit for 9 points and Lily Warlow added 8 but it wasn’t enough as Richland rode a 19-point first quarter to spoil Philipsburg-Osceola’s home opener, 54-29, on Dec. 8.
Lanie Marshall’s 19 points spearheaded Richland.
Maddy Malinich added 6 points for the Lady Mounties.
P-O opened the season with a 61-17 LHAC setback at Huntingdon on Dec. 6.
Malinich and Warlow fronted Philipsburg-Osceola with 6 points apiece.
Huntingdon had three scorers reach double figures. Lily Fiscus led the Lady Bearcats with 14 points.
