State High lacrosse player sets new record

SELINSGROVE — A record-setting regular season ended fittingly with another big record. Freshman Trey Combs broke the State College Area High School boys standard for goals in a lacrosse match with 10, in a 20-11 victory at Selinsgrove on Friday, May 10.

The Little Lions enter the postseason with a 16-1 mark.

Combs also had an assist. Cooper Brushwood, with five goals and four assists, and Ty Salazer, with three goals and six assists, finished with 9 points apiece for State College.

Brushwood broke the team record for goals in a season with 75 and points in a season with 110.

Owen Kissinger collected five ground balls and went 11-for-17 on faceoffs to set new single-season team marks in both those areas. Kissinger has won 210 faceoffs this season and registered 135 ground balls.

Tennison Banks and Connor Young netted the other two goals. Eli Espinoza turned up with an assist and five ground balls.

Owen Baron came up with 19 saves for the Little Lions.

The game was tight at halftime before State College created some separation with a 6-1 third-quarter scoring advantage.

It was only Selinsgrove’s third loss of the season.

On Wednesday, May 8, Brushwood scored six goals and Salazer combined four goals with three assists in a 17-6 triumph at Lower Dauphin.

Combs recorded three goals and an assist.

Banks, Kissinger, Nate Price and Owen Yerka completed the scoring for State.

Baron made 12 saves. Kissinger and Maddox Leitzell registered 10 and eight ground balls, respectively, while Kissinger also won 14 of 20 faceoffs.

State College girls dealt a blow

STATE COLLEGE — The State College girls’ endeavors to make it into the District 3 Class 3A playoffs were dealt a blow when Lower Dauphin turned back the host Lady Little Lions, 11-6, in the last match of the regular season on Wednesday, May 8.

Emma Lally and Macey Mitchell each garnered two goals for the Lady Little Lions. Mitchell also led the team with four draw controls.

Kate Fry and Lily Sidwell accounted for State’s other two goals. Olivia Miller caused five turnovers to go with her three draw controls.

Jackie Eveleth made five saves.

Bellefonte girls end on winning streak

BELLEFONTE — The Bellefonte girls scored 10 goals in each half and ended the season on a four-match winning streak with a 20-9 triumph over visiting Midd-West at Rogers Stadium on Friday, May 10.

The Lady Raiders only led 10-6 at halftime but buckled down and held Midd-West to just 3 in the second half, even though the team played one player short because of a yellow card the entire half and lost another player to a card in the second half.
