CAMP HILL — The State College Area High School girls tennis team split a pair of dual matches, posting a 5-0 win at Cedar Cliff on Wednesday, Sept. 20, in which the Little Lady Lions didn’t drop a set.
Number one singles player Joanna Liu was State’s most decisive winner against the Lady Colts, turning back Joey White, 6-1, 6-0. Third singles player Ephasinia Shimelis prevailed almost as convincingly, scoring a 6-1, 6-1 win against Asha Woodbright.
Virginia Paterno finished off the singles sweep over Sarah Valentine, 6-4, 6-3.
The first doubles team of Ava Bechtal and Lydia Shen defeated Cedar Cliff’s Jillian MacIntire and Sam Beaver, 6-2, 6-0. Lyla Higgins and Kara Lin prevailed against Lily Herbert and Emma Beatty, 6-2, 6-3, in second doubles.
Visiting Central Dauphin sent the Lady Little Lions to just their second loss in 13 starts on Friday, Sept. 22, 3-2, as the Lady Rams swept the doubles.
Liu and Shimelis scored State College’s points. Shimelis downed Ava Mansure, 6-2, 6-4. Liu needed a tiebreaker in the first set against Katie Berra before going on for a 7-6 (6-3), 6-2 victory.
Central Dauphin’s Julia Wiest, though, turned the tables on Paterno in second singles, 7-6 (6-4), 6-0.
Central Dauphin’s Sydney Plesco and Sadie Weller outlasted Higgins and Lin, 6-3, 6-2, after Lauren Walden and Anya Damdin overcame Bechtal and Shen 6-1, 6-2.
The Lady Little Lions’ attempt to bounce back on Monday against Hershey was thwarted by the weather as rain forced their match to be postponed.
