Stroke treatment at Mount Nittany earns national recognition

Lloyd Rogers

STATE COLLEGE — Mount Nittany Health has once again been honored on the national stage for its commitment to providing lifesaving stroke treatment.

For the second consecutive year, the health system received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, recognizing hospitals that consistently follow best practices to give stroke patients the best chance at survival and recovery. Mount Nittany also earned a spot on the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite and the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll.

The Get With The Guidelines program, developed by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association, is designed to help hospitals apply the latest treatment standards. Stroke remains the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and one of the leading causes of long-term disability. Experts stress that early detection and treatment can save lives and reduce lasting complications.

“This award is a testament to Mount Nittany Health’s continued commitment to improving patient care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines,” said Dr. Pete Roy, a neurologist at Mount Nittany Health. “This recognition underscores our dedication to delivering exceptional care using evidence-driven protocols, with the goal of ensuring more people in the Centre region can experience longer, healthier lives.”

The health system also earned the American Heart Association’s Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll distinction, which highlights hospitals that provide specialized care for stroke patients living with diabetes, which is a group often at higher risk for more severe outcomes.

“We are incredibly pleased to recognize Mount Nittany Health for its commitment to caring for patients with stroke,” said Dr. Steven Messe, volunteer chair of the American Heart Association’s Stroke System of Care Advisory Group. “Participation in Get With The Guidelines is associated with improved outcomes, fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates — a win for health systems, families and communities.”

Mount Nittany officials credited staff across multiple departments for the recognition, noting the award reflects not only medical expertise but also a collective commitment to patient care in the community.
