Suzanne Paterno of State College received the first honorary membership award from the Altrusa International of Centre County recently at the 66th Annual Altrusa District Two Conference during the group’s banquet and awards ceremony on April 30.

Altrusa International of Centre County Inc. was organized and chartered in 1951. The nonprofit organization continuously supports a variety of programs and projects that develop and enhance both children and adult literacy in the community and worldwide.

The club also participates in and supports environmental projects and both national and international human service projects and partners with other service organizations.

Paterno was inducted as the first honorary member for her years of exemplary volunteer service for many state and local organizations, including her 30-year involvement with Special Olympics of Pennsylvania.

She has also been very active in the Centre Volunteers in Medicine Super Saturday COVID vaccine clinics, Penn State THON, the Penn State College of Liberal Arts Alumni Association and the Penn State Pattee/Paterno Library Board, to mention a few of her many activities.

In addition to her countless hours of giving to our community, Paterno was noted to fulfill the Altrusa Key — amity, loyalty, talent, reciprocity, unity, service and achievement.
