ALTOONA — Altoona Area High School hosted the 49th annual Igloo Invitational on Saturday, March 28, welcoming 38 high schools from across the state for a highly competitive day of track and field action which featured standout performances in sprints, distance races and middle-distance events.
The 100 meters showcased elite speed on both the boys’ and girls’ sides. Fort Le Boeuf senior KC Wasiulewski led the boys’ field with a winning time of 11.00, edging State College’s Jayden Byrd who placed second in 11.10. On the girls’ side, Penn Cambria’s Kate Eckenrode captured first place in 12.57, narrowly holding off Hollidaysburg’s Jaclyn Sahlaney who finished second in 12.65.
In the 200 meters, Wasiulewski doubled back with another impressive performance winning in 22.67 to complete a sprint sweep for the Fort Le Boeuf standout. Kiski Area’s Jacob Pattison took second in 23.47.
For the girls, State College’s Sarah Kocher delivered a strong run to claim first in 25.99, while Tyrone’s Sarah Chichester followed in 26.60.
The 400 meters featured tight finishes in both races. Plum senior Kent Holmes took the boys title in 51.44, just ahead of Pattison who returned to place second in 51.56 and cap a strong day. On the girls side, Hollidaysburg freshman Sydney Ulery impressed with a personal-best time of 1:01.41 to win the event, while DuBois Central Catholic’s Julia Sebring finished close behind in 1:01.72.
Middle-distance events continued to highlight some of the meet’s top talent. In the 800 meters, State College junior Kyle Fritzsche claimed victory in 1:58.62, a personal-best performance, while Fort Le Boeuf’s Blake Glass placed second in 1:59.63. On the girls side, State College’s Evelyn Younkin took first in 2:22.43, with Somerset’s Libby Marteeny finishing second in 2:25.44.
Fritzsche returned in the 1600 meters to complete a distance double, winning in 4:24.56 and further establishing himself as one of the meet’s top performers. Glass again finished runner-up in 4:28.66. In the girls race, Marteeny improved on her earlier performance to win the 1600 meters in a personal-best 5:12.05, while Altoona’s Ashlyn Noce secured second in 5:14.47.
With athletes from 38 schools competing, the Igloo Invitational once again proved to be one of the premier early-season meets in the region. Strong individual performances across both the boys and girls competitions highlighted the depth of talent in attendance, setting the stage for a competitive season ahead.
