STATE COLLEGE — Radio listeners across Centre County have been asking the same question in recent days: Where is 98.7 The Fox?
The local radio station has been off air and offline since at least Feb. 19, according to a notice posted on its website.
An update dated Feb. 19 on the station’s homepage states that the station is “off the air and stream,” adding that the outage is not related to technical issues. No timeline was provided for a return to broadcasting.
While the station is currently not broadcasting on FM or streaming platforms, its social media presence remains active. Posts continue to appear on X, formerly Twitter, through the account @LetsTalk987Fox.
A post made on Feb. 19 from the X account stated the following:
“To our loyal listeners/streamers: just maybe our little program may be done. We’ll see. Honestly: tech issues, lack of advertisers, some of who don’t pay their bills. Media is tough these days, we knew that. In the meantime, we’ll keep our daily post going here [X], lots of stories.”
The Centre County Gazette attempted to contact the station multiple times by phone and email to seek clarification on the outage and the station’s future plans — but did not immediately receive a response.
Public records indicate that the station’s federal authorization remains in place. According to the Federal Communications Commission, the broadcast license for 98.7 The Fox is still listed as active as of Feb. 24. FCC rules generally require stations that go silent for extended periods to notify the commission, though short-term outages do not necessarily trigger immediate enforcement action.
The lack of detailed information has left listeners speculating, particularly given the station’s focus on talk programming, local interviews and community-oriented content.
For now, the station has not announced when or if regular broadcasting will resume.
The Centre County Gazette will continue to seek comments and provide updates as more information becomes available.
