As Career and Technical Education Month got underway in February, the Centre County Board of Commissioners is re-introducing $15,000 of 2021 funding for emergency responder scholarships, Commissioner Mark Higgins said on Tuesday.

“These scholarships encourage new adult volunteers and the retention of junior volunteers for Centre County fire companies and EMS services,” Higgins said.

The county first began offering the scholarship program in 2019.

Individual scholarships of up to $2,500 per academic year are available for any course of study at the Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology, South Hills School of Business and Technology and, new this year, the Phlebotomy Institute of Central Pennsylvania, which is operated by Centre LifeLink EMS.

“A number of these degrees and certificates are in health care and other fields where there are current needs for additional employees,” Higgins said.

Recipients must remain on active duty through the end of the academic year of the scholarship.

The scholarships are managed through Centre Foundation. Eligibility criteria and the application are available at centre-foundation.academicworks.com/opportunities/3362.

Centre Foundation manages the the application and award process and will pay scholarships directly to the school. The Centre County Training Center Advisory Board Committee and the County Commissioners are the review
committee for the scholarship.
